Poor performance, worse story
Revisado: 07-17-24
I hate it when the protagonist fails to say the obvious in a situation but chooses to say whatever is unproductive.
This is the first post-apocalyptic novel I have seen where the protagonists (1) split up in most dangerous situations and (2) enter a debate, preferably in the middle of the road, about non-issues.
I gave it a try but I can't get through. The performance is annoying (although I could live with it)

What a pity: promised depth just fizzles out
Revisado: 01-24-23
I like light space opera, and I enjoyed listening to Milk Run. The narrator was OK, but why have protagonists sound like naive teenagers if the plot requires them to be smart and very capable? Multiple times, the plot development promised depth and complexity, which then evaporated into inane simplicity. All in all this was just about OK, but I wouldn't have minded not reading it at all

But a crime so horrific, so brutal in its execution, turns those mundane expectations around. An investigation into the death of a senior leader in their underground utopia safe from the harsh radioactive wastelands beyond their walls forces Quinn beyond that safety and into the world outside.

Good read, but: unfinished and it drags on
Revisado: 12-14-22
A very interesting (post-apocalyptic) world to explore, and a great tone of voice (both in the text and the performance). However.
This is part one of a series, but as a matter of fact it just stops in the middle of the story.
I like the dry humor but after awhile it gets on my nerves. And the story gets rather repetitive after awhile.
Would I buy part two? Maybe.

Katmai National Park: 7,000 square miles of rugged, isolated wilderness in southern Alaska. Vast stretches of frozen tundra, deep ancient forests, and impassable ravines ruled by the massive volcanic God, Devil's Desk. Despite the vigorous protests of Michael, the Talbots and the Tynes head to the park for a much-needed vacation away from it all.

Not good enough
Revisado: 12-03-22
I'm sorry, I tried, but I gave up after three hours.
There is definitely something here, but the conversations are sophomoric and characters and their reasoning are simply childish. For no good reason characters' choices and priorities are one-dimensional and unbelievable, leading to a mess of random plot developments.
Pity.

When John Bandicut sets out across the surface of Triton, he's hardly ready for the storm of chaos that's about to blow through his life. The alien Quarx that soon inhabits his mind is humanity's first contact with an alien life. The Quarx, part of an ancient galactic civilization that manipulates chaos theory to predict catastrophic events, seeks to prevent a cometary collision that could destroy the Earth. But it must have help. If Bandicut chooses to trust the Quarx, he must break all the rules - indeed, sacrifice his own life.

intriguing premise but sophomoric development
Revisado: 10-12-22
The premise is intriguing. The plot develops mainly through dialog and internal monologue. Sadly, these texts are sophomoric both in how they evolve the story and paint the protagonist's emotional state. There is utmost urgency, yet the protagonist finds time to go to bars, chat with women, go to the gym, and whatnot. I read about two-thirds, and then I couldn't take it anymore. No significant developments between chapters 2 and 19. What a waste.

Boring and skipping potentially interesting stuff
Revisado: 05-07-22
I like this kind of space opera, but this one is not for me; I stopped reading halfway. The plot is incredibly predictable, the main character is superficial, unsympathetic and almost impossible to relate to. Their alien pet is allegedly empathetic, which results mainly in it broadcasting their private emotional state to all and sundry. Who would want that? Oddly enough, important parts of the plot development, parts that I anticipated and would have liked to read, are simply absent. One moment we're here, and the next we're there and have to surmise what happened. And sadly, what we do get is often boring, while opportunities for (imho) interesting stuff are left unsaid.
