Historia
Bartimaeus, everyones favorite (wise-cracking) djinni, is back in book four of this best-selling series. As alluded to in the footnotes throughout the series, Bartimaeus has served hundreds of magicians during his 5,010 year career. Now, for the first time, fans will go back in time with the djinni, to Jerusalem and the court of King Solomon in 950s BC. Only in this adventure, it seems the great Bartimaeus has finally met his match.

A good stand alone
Revisado: 08-02-23
To me it seems as if this book has lot to offer in terms of story, yet it still left me feeling somewhat disappointed.
While the first three books were named “The Bartimeus trilogy” they felt more like books telling Nathaniels story to me. Leaving this book feelings far more like a stand alone story than a part of a sequence.
And I wish it had been advertised more as such since that probably would have helped with my expectations going in. Nevertheless I enjoyed the k and especially the narration was top notch as always

A fitting end to the trilogy
Revisado: 07-12-23
I am aware that there is now a fourth book, but I have yet to hear it.
However it was a very welcome listen and a blast from the past for me. The introduction of Jin getting weak when in the world for to long felt very unnecessary, it introduces far to many uncertainties for previously introduced concepts. Such as Jin encapsulated in object and so on and why they aren’t effected by this prolonged captivity.
Beyond that annoyance I very much like the story. It has a good amount of character growth and shows the “true” character of Kitty, John and Bartimeus in a better way than previous books.
The ending which I see many didn’t like and s one of the parts I prefer. It’s abrupt, sudden and with little fanfare. A very real ending. As such it clearly isn’t for everyone, but not all stories can or should have a happy ending for everyone.
I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone who picked up and finished the first two.

A good story
Revisado: 01-30-23
I like the book, and Bates is growing on me as the narrator of the books, especially now that most of the characters have been “replaced” and the pronunciations, names and dialects are more consistent with the previous book.
That said the historical part of the book is where it’s lacking for me. I’m not a historian, but it feels as if there are more deviations form the actual history here than in most of the other books.
That said it is still a great story and well worth it of you have come this far following Uthred.

Historia
The new novel in Bernard Cornwell's number one bestselling series The Warrior Chronicles, on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. In the battle for power, there can be only one ruler.England is fractured, torn apart more by internal fighting than the threat of Viking invasion. The ruler of Mercia is dying, leaving no legitimate heir. His wife is a formidable fighter and great leader, but no woman has ever ruled over an English kingdom.

Overall a good story
Revisado: 01-24-23
The later books are not as gripping as the first ones but the stories are still entertaining.
Bates is growing on me as a narrator, although for me he will probably always be the second best Uthred.
Well worth a listen if you enjoyed the previous books in the series.

Historia
In the last years of the ninth century, King Alfred of Wessex is in failing health, and his heir is an untested youth. The Danes, who have failed so many times to conquer Wessex, smell opportunity.... First comes Harald Bloodhair, a savage warrior leading a Viking horde, who is encouraged to cruelty by his woman, Skade. But Alfred still has the services of Uhtred, his unwilling warlord, who leads Harald into a trap and, at Farnham in Surrey, inflicts one of the greatest defeats the Vikings were ever to suffer.

Good, not great
Revisado: 01-15-23
Bates isn’t bad. And given a different starting point his performance probably wouldn’t have bothered most people in the slightest.
However the shift to him as narrator is a pretty big one, so the first few hours of the book were a little hard to get into and the names and place names that changed as well as some dialectical choices.
All in all I quite like Bates rendition although he isn’t my favourite narrator of the series, but I absolutely think he is one you can learn to love or at least like in the coming books.

Historia
Julius Caesar has been assassinated. A nation is in mourning. Revenge will be bloody... Rome's great hero has been brutally murdered by his most trusted allies. While these self-appointed Liberatores seek refuge in the senate, they have underestimated one man: Caesar's adopted son Octavian, a man whose name will echo through history as Augustus Caesar. Uniting with his great rival Mark Antony, Octavian will stop at nothing to seek retribution and avenge his father's death.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-02-22
The story is a weak end to the series all in all. I loved and still love the Emperor series, but the book felt odd and slightly disconnected from the others.
Octavian spent a lot of time with many of the other characters in previous books, but that seems to have been forgotten in large part. But all in all I enjoy the story.
It must however be mentioned that the narrator sounds as if he wishes he could do anything but read the book. I almost didn’t finish the audiobook for that reason. It is unfortunate, he has a comfortable voice but I don’t think he was the right choice for this book.
