Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Again
Revisado: 09-06-23
Brown yet again makes an indelible impression. His characters grow, grow and grow. Always in ways that feel genuine. None of the problems feel forced, none of the solutions too convenient, none of the emotional moments too tacky to feel genuine. He has hit his stride as an author and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Historia
Fire. Wind. Pestilence. Earthquake. Drought. Lightning. These are the six Decimates, wielded by sorcerers for both good and evil. But a seventh Decimate exists - the most devastating one of all. For centuries, the realms of Belleger and Amika have been at war, with sorcerers from both sides harnessing the Decimates to rain blood and pain upon their enemy. But, somehow, in some way, the Amikans have discovered and invoked a seventh Decimate, one that strips all lesser sorcery of its power.

Not sure why this author is liked
Revisado: 11-21-22
Talk about the most simplistic, boring, unimaginative characters. Everyone seems like they may be have learning deficiencies and were dropped on their head as a child. The performance was the only thing that kept me in it as long as I was. Simplistic plot, simple characters, braindead dialogue.

The people suffer under the centuries-long rule of the Moon Throne. The royal family—the despotic emperor and his monstrous sons, the Three Terrors—hold the countryside in their choking grip. They bleed the land and oppress the citizens with the frightful powers they inherited from the god locked under their palace.

Something fresh
Revisado: 10-03-22
Absolutely magnificent writing. Stories within stories within perspectives. Somehow both dryly historical in nature and yet emotionally rich, grounded in a humanity as plain and simple as you could think. An incredible writing accomplishment.

Historia
Gov-corp detective Carlos Moreno was only a baby when Atlas left Earth to seek truth among the stars. But in that moment, the course of Carlos' entire life changed. Atlas is what took his mother away; what made his father lose hope; what led Alejandro Casales, leader of the religious cult known as the Circle, to his door. And now, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Atlas' departure, it has something to do with why Casales was found dead in his hotel room.

So damn good
Revisado: 09-27-21
Newman followed up a somewhat straightforward sci-fi book with a classic detective story worth the slightest tinge of sci-fi mixed in. In spite of that, rippling influences of the previous story are present throughout and never quite fully set aside, only to hit home in an avalanche ending. A great story through the lens of another beautifully written broken person. This author is rapidly becoming a new favorite for me and is definitely deserving of more attention and praise. Well done.

An incredible sci-fi
Revisado: 09-24-21
Definitely a good listen. The fact the the author read it definitely made it even better. I won’t spoil anything, but the author has done a great job of using an undeniably human and flawed character to be our guide through a fantastic story. The 4/5 is honestly mostly because the ending was a bit abrupt to me, but that really is likely just a me problem. I look forward to reading the next one.

Amazing
Revisado: 05-06-21
First off, great voice performance. That can make or break an audiobook and this guy delivers. Each character has a truly unique sound.
Second. Wow. John Gwynne started with a very tropy seeming chosen one story with book 1 and has absolutely warped every assumption he allows you to think about where the story will end up. Competent (for once) bad guys, moral grey issues, deep set betrayals, believable characters that make understandable choices, well meaning rogues and righteous tyrants. My goodness. By the end of book 1 of this series I still had some doubts. Had potential but didn’t quite add up all the way. By book 2 I was sold. Now, I’m a fan. He has taken what seemed so naturally to be a coming of age/YA/chosen one rut in the road at the beginning to be something unique and powerful that really delivers.

Something new and amazing, without being anything new.
Revisado: 12-20-20
Hauntingly beautiful. The story isn’t incredibly complex. The twists and turns are fairly predictable. There are only 4 characters.
But this DELIVERS. The performances bring it to life, the music submerses us in the world and the themes are actualized poignantly, without feeling cheap or forced. At least that’s how I feel. It isn’t the first short story of its kind, the first one to make its points, the first one to explore the ideas. But the overall performance is very new, and delivered the story in just the right way. I absolutely loved it. Kudos to these voice actors and the quality of the music and editing. I doubt you will receive even half the credit you deserve. This is what happens when a creative vision is realized in perfect execution. I’ll be listening to it again at some point, for sure.
