The author presents as an indoctrinated colorist.
Revisado: 11-06-24
The story would have been decent if it wasn’t peppered with the self-loathing of the author. From the beginning where the main character is described as being beautiful because she has light skin and hair that is not “kinky”. The author writes very telling lines such as, “her kinky but groomed hair”. The “but” denotes an apology, an excuse. Suggesting kinky hair is not desirable hair. And this is one of the more subtle ways the author’s self-hate presents itself in her prose. It’s sad. Very sad. And not at all entertaining.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

I felt the sun on my face, the excitement of moving to a new place full of expectation, hopes, and dreams. I also felt the utter despair that made the leaving necessary, along with the sting of rejection and hopelessness when the new places visited the same violence and systematic oppression on the refugees fleeing the south. This book is a must read!

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Eye opening
Revisado: 05-11-23
Very well written and read. America does have a caste system and this argument is very well supported. This book answers questions such as to why large percentages of upper caste individuals in the lower social economic subgroup vote against their own interests. I always believed it was out of ignorance. I now understand it is also a desire to support and continue the caste system. Which they understand has historically afforded them privileges they would otherwise have to earn. This book is a must read!

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Racism is more viscous when it’s systematic and labeled as education
Revisado: 04-16-22
In the beginning, when going back to the history of the first men and women, Brier begrudgingly states they came into Egypt from the south to populate the land of Egypt. Then much later Brier claims that Egyptians are not Black. He states this emphatically several times. But never says Egyptians are not White. Africans are many shades. He tries to use color to define ethnicity or race. Africans are every shade of the color spectrum and are still AFRICAN! Meaning not European. Which is what people mean when they say Egyptians are Black. They mean Egyptians are NATIVE AFRICANS. I cringed when he said he teaches Black kids. He would never teach a child of mine. His racism detracts from what might have otherwise been an interesting lecture. If you’re racist and you’re interested in bolstering your views with more of the same rhetoric don’t waste your time. Even you will not be able to miss the contradictions. If you are not a racist. Still, do not waste your time. This is not the honest historical account minus racial biases you are looking for. Keep searching.

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

The indoctrinated fool who wrote this is more ignorant than the people he desperately tries to belittle
Revisado: 04-04-22
This is so out of touch and and ridiculous that the author frequently contradicts himself. Minimizing the impact of generations of enslavement by savage enslavers who subjected the enslaved to unspeakable trauma. Then pointing out differences in advancements between free people of color and enslaved. Do yourself a favor and skip this one!

Historia
It is the end of days. A nuclear strike hits New York. Alfie, a young black male, survives but with no memory of what has happened. The only thing he can remember with any clarity is how to play his guitar and a few snatches of old blues and folk songs. Another survivor, Meg, has taken refuge in the hills of Vermont, and she, too, is the victim of near absolute amnesia. Her only hope is to survive these darkest of days.

Indoctrination and internalized racism. Angels are white, demons are black
Revisado: 03-19-22
This work of fiction has me missing Toni Morrison. Her descriptions of black as majestic and beautiful as it is. She was no indoctrinated fool. She understood the error of seeing the world through the eyes of the oppressor. Black is beautiful, black is holy, black is earth which is the color of men that were made from it. This author of this book is lost.

It’s the narrator and the prose for me
Revisado: 11-09-21
The prose is unique, raw and gritty. An oasis in a desert of what I call “hood books”. This one isn’t over the top ghetto or annoyingly whitewashed. The narrator reflects the main character’s well bred, well educated educated nuances perfectly. Five stars!

Historia
A little over 100 years ago, East Africa was terra incognita to most whites: a land largely unmapped, sparsely settled by Europeans, and teeming with wildlife. It was the hunter-adventurer's paradise, and by the early 20th century, a small, lionhearted clan of explorers and big-game hunters began leading safaris there for money.

The reader plows through too fast. Not pausing at periods. The whole thing blurrs together.
Revisado: 07-03-21
Seems like good writing. I will have to read the book myself though. The reader plows through the text too fast. Not pausing at periods. Making whole sequences sound like a run on sentence. I tried slowing it down but it doesn’t disguise the lack of pauses between sentences. The whole thing blurrs together.
