Historia
Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her - how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way.

Great Cover Art
Revisado: 11-19-22
So I picked this book up because I saw in an article in the NY Times that they'd made it into a move. I thought "nice... must be pretty good". It's not. However, apparently lots of people don't agree with me, and that's fine, it's your time and your money. It's at best a poorly written young adult novel. The characters are weak and the story is implausible. I read a lot of science fiction and horror, so when I say "implausible" I have an understanding that when you are in a horror or sci-fi genre there is a certain amount of "suspension of disbelief" that is expected, HOWEVER this story is SOOOOO stupid, the author makes no attempt to explain how a human being (not a supernatural being, or an enhanced being, just a run of the mill human) can do a "bones and all" scenario". Of the nine hours and 5 minutes, there are probably cumulative 60 minutes that are okay... I have no idea HOW this "novel" floated to the top and someone invested money to make a movie out of it... baffling. I encourage you all to go out and see the movie, really, go for it.

Crap
Revisado: 01-24-22
I'm going to go against the flow and tell you that this book is awful and shame on me, I'm done listening after 5 hours. The story is tedious, the protagonist is a the basic injured, drunk, hopeless, profane, "gritty", boring, repetitive archetype. AND Bray... Im so sick of Bray's voice. I used to think I liked him, but he's wearing on me too. So, my problem. All you all enjoy. More power to ya.

Very Unusual
Revisado: 10-12-21
This was very interesting and very unusual. The supernatural element of this story was not apparent from the beginning and the way that the author exposed that to the reader was subtile and very well done. The narration was excellent and overall I was well entertained for all 11 hours and 35 minutes. I had forgotten that I had read another novel by Mr. Gregory (The Spoonbenders)... also a very good read, unique subject matter. Good stuff, highly recommended.

“This isn't strictly speaking an instructional manual, but a work of comedic philosophy.” Elvis Costello - songwriter, singer, author, and Fender Jazzmaster known to his admirers as “The Little Hands of Concrete” - spins his tale with wit, grit, and spit to spare. How to Play the Guitar and Y, Costello’s new entry into Audible’s Words + Music series, combines recitation, impersonation, and musical illustration to show you how to turn a three-chord trick into a four-chord caper and let your curiosity take you where it will.

Well Done
Revisado: 10-12-21
I truly enjoyed this brief interlude into the personality of Elvis Costello. As a long time guitar player I love that Mr. Costello attempts to demystify the guitar. In my experience this is the opposite attitude of most professional musicians who would have you believe that they have been endowed by the gods with some rare superpower. Not that Mr. Costello isn't a superstar in his own right and well deserved, but I was impressed by his humility and humor (and his ability to narrate... not easy). I was sad when it ended. Well recommended!

Historia
Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

History Repeating Itself in Fiction
Revisado: 10-12-21
The story was well done, but pretty much ripped from the headlines of the French Revolution... the exception being that "our Marie Antoinette" makes it out the other side... but wearing the same white dress... Some good twists and turns that I couldn't predict. I definitely recommend it, but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of imagination and use of the French Revolution as a template. Clever, but lots of blatant reuse of historical fact...

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Another Weir Classic
Revisado: 08-31-21
This was great and it was one of those stories where I sat in my driveway after an hour long commute and kept listening. I would have hoped for a different ending (not that it ends badly), but that's on me. The science Weir brings to his novels is innovative and thought provoking (and sometimes within the realm of possibility). I can see this one being made into a movie...

Meh...
Revisado: 08-31-21
This is a young adult novel IMHO... a post apocalyptic coming of age story. The dialect was a bit over the top also (IMO), I got used to it, and I recognize the challenge to write in an uneducated voice, but I think it complicates the flow of the dialogue. Basically 14 hours of my life I'll never get back. It didn't totally suck, but it sucked a lot.

A Classic
Revisado: 08-31-21
Like Shaw Shank, this story is a study in human nature, broken people striving for redemption and everything that goes along with it. I think this is one of King's best in a long while. Not sure why some people didn't like Paul Sparks, I thought he was quite good and I key in on irritating narrators. Two thumbs up for this one.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Can't recommend it
Revisado: 06-26-21
I have loved Andy Weir's stuff other than this one. The protagonist... I really disliked her and I don't know if I would have disliked her less if there had been a different narrator... who knows. It seemed like Mr. Weir was trying to channel a 27 year old woman and just couldn't pull it off. Yeah... teen fiction-level stuff with bad language. I would recommend a pass on this one... I really didn't want to give it two stars.

Give it a chance.
Revisado: 06-26-21
Thomas Harris decided that he would read this himself. There are few authors who have the talent to read their own books and Mr. Harris really should stick to writing. I almost stopped listening after 3 minutes when I realized the awful narration was the author himself, but I stuck it out and he actually warmed to the task... still not great, but tolerable. The story is good, if short... More of a novella than a novel. But those who can write write and those who can't criticize... so having never written an original thought in my life... it's worth two credits (IMHO).
