If you are looking for a Jack Teacher itinerant knight story, this ain't it. It reads like every political/powerful cover-up story you've read, with the spouse as the real baddie (plot twist, sorta). This not the Reacher novel you've become accustomed to. Yes, Reacher is lethal, and super smart. By setting the novel during his time in the army, it becomes almost a pure procedural.

Brilliant. As with any book, there are some "yes but" passages, but surprisingly few. The theme mag work best as a tight analogy rather than description, for example.

We tend to forget the real sea change in American law represented by the 13th-15th Amendments - and the Supreme Court's evisceration of much of their force.

How could a volume this thin and clearly written make such a complete and well-supported case for free speech? If you read only one book about addressing hate speech, this should be the one. It cannot receive enough praise.

Metaphysics and mysticism as science

If one cannot falsify, prove or check a theory empirically is it science. Baggott doubts it is. I think he is right. Listen to his argument (and parallel or similar arguments by Roger Penrose. Baggott asks a tough question: if testability or predictive power on what we see isn't a criteria, how do we consistently and persuasively separate science from psuedo-science and mysticism? While my first reaction was to dismiss this as fanciful, the more I thought about modern anti-science thought and how it can (and in some cases does) use logic similar or identical to some modern physicists to justify what itself as scientific or to argue that "traditional" science is not the only or best road to knowledge. Think through what Baggott has to say. One may not agree with all of it, but he raises troubling questions.

Anyone interested in a careful scholar's view of the Constitution's relevance to modern life should read this book. I admit agreeing with the author more than not, but his careful scholarship and Constitutional analysis, demands respect.

The book will not engage true constitutional scholars, or so I suspect (their loss). Professor Amar writes with the informed and interested citizen in mind. But a political polemic it is not. Amar explains his understanding of Constitutional reasoning and in a series of overviews to previously published articles (and those articles), shows how ordinary voters can be taught constitutional concepts. He also does not take the easy out -- saying that all controversies have two equal or nearly equal constitutional arguments. For example, Dred Scott was wrong. While people defend positions and their arguments should be addressed respectfully and defeated decisively.

As a reader, there will likely be moments when you want to say "I don't think so" to what you are reading. Some of the arguments and analysis here raised my eyebrows or furrowed my brow. But on the whole, just about all of us can profit from reading this book.

A fine techno-political thriller. Largely worthy of the Clancy brand. But in this case, a few too many moving parts.
