Historia
In this factual account written with General Carl Steiner (Ret.), a commander who held responsibility for all U.S. Special Operations forces across all service lines, we get special insight into a largely secretive community whose members do not talk about their work. We hear about it only afterwards: the Achille Lauro hijacking, the "takedown" of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, the efforts to find Aidid in Somalia. These are men sent in to do the impossible - and often, they achieve it.

Not As Advertised
Revisado: 03-30-25
This book is little more than an autobiography of General Stiner with little bits of Tom Clancy sprinkled throughout. To that extent 95% of the book focuses on the US Army SOF. Also, much of the book focuses on planning and actions at the strategic level while makes for a dull reading. This book at on my shelf unread for over 20 years and should have stayed there unread. You’ve been warned.

Historia
Beginning in the 1950s, America entered a period of unprecedented social reform. This remarkable book demonstrates how the social programs of the 1960s and ’70s had the unintended and perverse effect of slowing and even reversing earlier progress in reducing poverty, crime, ignorance, and discrimination. Using widely understood and accepted data, it conclusively demonstrates that the amalgam of reforms from 1965 to 1970 actually made matters worse.

Reading this is the equivalent of watching paint dry
Revisado: 02-12-25
The subject matter is dry, read by a dry narrator puts the reader to sleep with its dull recitation of useless statistics. I never once felt pulled in by the material.

Historia
The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.

I’m a little bit biased because I loved his previous books, but if you want to know about the intricacies of power and how men use it, this is it.

Historia
An avid member of the Hitler Youth in 1940s Vienna, Johannes Betzler discovers his parents are hiding a Jewish girl named Elsa behind a false wall in their home. His initial horror turns to interest - then love and obsession. After his parents disappear, Johannes is the only one aware of Elsa's existence in the house and the only one responsible for her fate. By turns disturbing and blackly comic, Christine Leunens' captivating and masterful novel examines this world of truth and lies, laying bare the darkest corners of the human soul.

Not like the movie, and that’s good and bad. I’d recommend it to anyone.

I’ll give you the chance to scroll up or down so as not to get a spoiler alert:……………….,,,…….
Simply put, the boy is a monster. On second thought, monster is too nice of a description for what he does to that poor girl. The first third of the book reads like a coming of age story, second third reads like a romantic novel and the third part of the story reads like The Collector (another great read if you’re unfamiliar with this book). Overall, the book grabbed me and made me root for and against some characters. I would recommend to anyone.

Historia
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Well researched but leans left
Revisado: 11-09-24
Every conspiracy theory from Russia collusion to the fine people hoax goes unchallenged. He also characterizes Trump as a tyrannical buffoon who is simply happy to be there and delegates the important work of the presidency to his subordinates.

Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Historia
From burglary to armed robbery and murder, infamous bad guy Frank Cullotta not only did it all, in Cullotta he admits to it - and in graphic detail. This no-holds-barred biography chronicles the life of a career criminal who started out as a thug on the streets of Chicago and became a trusted lieutenant in Tony Spilotro's gang of organized lawbreakers in Las Vegas. Cullotta's was a world of high-profile heists, street muscle, and information - lots of it - about many of the FBI's most wanted.
