This novel had me sitting on on the edge of my seat. I do not know a lot about this period of history but it is only the background to a strong tale with plenty of twists and turns. The two narrators are wonderful giving a flavour to the contrast of an insider and an outsider.

Historia
When 81-year-old Jay Mendelsohn decides to enroll in the undergraduate Odyssey seminar his son teaches at Bard College, the two find themselves on an adventure as profoundly emotional as it is intellectual. For Jay, a retired research scientist who sees the world through a mathematician's unforgiving eyes, this return to the classroom is his "one last chance" to learn the great literature he'd neglected in his youth - and, even more, a final opportunity to more fully understand his son, a writer and classicist.

Historia
Jean Mason has a doppelganger. She's never seen her, but others swear they have. Apparently, her identical twin hangs out in Kensington Market, where she sometimes buys churros and drags an empty shopping cart down the streets, like she's looking for something to put in it. Jean's a grown woman with a husband and two kids, as well as a thriving bookstore in downtown Toronto, and she doesn't rattle easily - not like she used to. But after two customers insist they've seen her double, Jean decides to investigate.

Total waste of time
Revisado: 07-28-18
I have not read a book this bad in many many years! I cannot imagine how this could win a Giller prize. The narrator is a woman but is really a man who does not know how woman behave or think. Characters are of the cardboard variety, introduced, not developed and then discarded. The plot line is bizarre and does not convince. I am sure that the author once worked in a bookshop, a hospital and has spent lots of time in public parks observing the fauna. There is even a-nod to the radio program “Writers and company”.

I really enjoyed this book which I feel is much better than her earlier Achilles book. There are no unbelievable characters, longueurs or far fetched story developments. The narrator is really good.

The Portrait of a Lady tells the compelling and ultimately tragic tale of a beautiful young American woman's encounter with European sophistication. Set principally in England and Italy, the story follows Isabel Archer's fortunes as a variety of admirers vie for her hand. Her choice will be crucial, and she is not wanting for advice, whether from the generous-spirited Ralph Touchett or the charming Madame Merle.

Packs a punch
Revisado: 04-15-18
Listening to this story after an absence of forty years serves to teach me that views change over time. Today, I see Balzac with the presence of money in relationships. James weaves a long story and then out of nowhere there is a slap to the face. The narrator successfully brings all this to life.

A fascinating biography of Julius Caesar which has no dry spots. The rise to power and the political machinations of the end of the Roman Republic are well described. A special mention for Derek Perkins - the narrator. He has a wonderful voice that is a pleasure to listen to.

Historia
From the start of Elizabeth McKenzie’s beguiling fiction debut, we are drawn into the offbeat worldview of sharp-eyed, intrepid Ann Ransom. Stop That Girl chronicles Ann’s colorful coming-of-age travails, from her childhood in a disjointed family through her tender adolescence and beyond. Along the way, she discovers the absurdities that lurk around every corner of a young woman’s life, by way of oafish neighbors, overzealous boyfriends, prurient vegetable salesmen, sour landlords, and an iconoclast grandmother, known even to her family as Dr. Frost.

Worst book that I have encountered in a long time
Revisado: 10-21-17
A disjointed story that wanders aimlessly with none of its parts connected to any extent. Characters are introduced and few are developed to any extent. Those that are are not believable. I listened to the end hoping for a recovery but none turned up. About as much pleasure as banking your head against the wall.

Historia
Carson McCullers was all of 23 when she published her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. She became an overnight literary sensation, and soon such authors as Tennessee Williams were calling her "the greatest prose writer that the South [has] produced." The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter tells an unforgettable tale of moral isolation in a small southern mill town in the 1930s.

Historia
From the ashes of World War II, Rome was reborn as the epicenter of film, fashion, creative energy, tabloid media, and bold-faced libertinism that made "Italian" a global synonym for taste, style, and flair. A confluence of cultural contributions created a bright, burning moment in history: it was the heyday of fashion icons such as Pucci and Brioni. Rome's huge movie studio, Cinecitta, attracted a dizzying array of stars, like Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and Frank Sinatra.

An interesting read about Italian cinema
Revisado: 06-04-17
I really enjoyed this book. I had seen several of the films covered but many years ago. The book puts these films and others, in the specific context of their time. I have decided to go back and view these films again. I withheld a fifth star because the author has a tendency to list names ad nauseam which slows down the story. The reader has an excellent Italian accent when saying names or sentences in Italian.
