Bad reader
Revisado: 04-05-24
Native Mississippians here. This is a great story with a great depiction of attitudes on race (aside from the comically bad male gaze love scenes). But the reader is … painful. Nobody on this planet has ever pronounced Natchez that way. Talk about cringe. It was bad enough suffering through his weird female and child voices, but nat-CHEHZ nearly killed me. Read this one, don’t listen.

Lame predictable plot
Revisado: 03-06-24
Boring, predictable plot. Bone acting was okay —some even good— except for the lisping guy. Not an enjoyable listen, and I fell asleep multiple times trying to get through it.

Historia
Kitty Harris has it all: cosily coupled up with boyfriend Archie, she’s putting in the hours at an ad agency to land her dream job. OK, so maybe they’ve become a bit too comfortable in their routine, with pizza night every Thursday, and maybe the agency isn’t so much up-and-coming as been-and-gone, but Kitty is happy. Until one diamond ring sitting pretty in her pepperoni ruins everything. Kitty does NOT want to get married, not after being caught in the crosshairs of her parent’s destructive divorce.

This Psych 312 assignment just might send me off the deep end. Determining whether love at first sight really exists with Robbie Moravian as my project partner of all people? He’s the sappiest man alive, so upbeat I could scream, and clearly rooting for happy endings at every turn. How does he not learn from experience considering our own meet-cute last semester almost got us expelled? But we both need to pass this course to graduate. So we’re interviewing five random couples about their meet-cutes and relationships and spending all this time together. Which is certainly...educational.

Unbelievably bad narration
Revisado: 10-09-23
Mispronounced words, bad cadence, poor reading comprehension resulting in pauses in wrong places, no inflection or emphasis… The narration is awful on this, and comes near ruining this important classic American literature.

Historia
Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Powerful women have shaped laws, led rebellions, and played key roles in dynastic struggles. Some were caught up in forces beyond their control, while others manipulated and murdered their way to the top. However, unearthing their stories from the historical record has been a challenge, with the ordinary difficulties of preserving information across the generations increased by centuries of historical bias and gendered expectations.

Enjoyable, difficult listen
Revisado: 04-20-23
These are great vignettes about some well-known women and several lesser-known. I was inspired by many of the stories. The lecturer is hard to listen to at times, but the stories make up for any weakness there, and she’s clearly passionate about the material. Hoping to get my daughter to listen to it.

Boring
Revisado: 02-12-23
I don’t write and so it seems disingenuous to criticize work I can’t reproduce or do better. But here I am anyway, in my arrogance.
I’m new to Sanderson and loved Mistborn and Stormlight. This isn’t that. It’s hard to pin down what is so terrible about this story, but I’ve been listening to this for the past two or three weeks and could not stay awake. Finally finished last night, and I will not listen to the next two in this series. I’ll switch back to his not-Western stuff.
That reader guy is snooty sounding and the accents are inexplicable every time. Australia? On another planet? He seems to miss the point of a passage and his delivery butchers it. The pauses between scene shifts within a chapter are too short and inconsistent, often leaving the listener bewildered. I hate suffering this guy to get to the good story, and I do wish authors would move off him. There are many many better audiobook readers.

Historia
The audiobook chronicles the Great Awakening that gave people the means to develop an individual sense of spiritual conviction. Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield were two of the most prominent leaders of the Great Awakening. Together, they forged a new form of evangelical Christianity that made sense to ordinary people and came to epitomize religion in America.

Truly awful narration of interesting history
Revisado: 11-09-22
This history is incredibly interesting and it’s a great exploration of source documents near the events of the first great awakening. Unfortunately, the reader of this audio book is so awful that it becomes near impossible to determine when Tracey ends and a quoted passage begins. This is probably one I should have bought in paper form.

Historia
My Man Jeeves, first published in 1919, introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is coolheaded and poised.

Visiting her family's South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband, Paul, is gone, and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. Predictable plot twists, read by people who could not keep their “southern” accents on point. Not my favorite.
