Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Good Listen
Revisado: 01-13-25
This is a good listen about the war but it borrows so much from Lynda Devanter's "Home Before Morning" that I found that book to be a more satisfying read. Still an excellent book, I'd advise reading both.

An Ode to Personal Denial
Revisado: 05-27-24
I listened all the way to the end thinking the author at some point would see herself and how incredibly damaged she was....but no. It was just depressing.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Complex but Fascinating Story
Revisado: 02-26-24
The topic is pretty daunting from a scientific standpoint but the author does a good job of boiling it down to laymen's terms. The story itself is fascinating and I enjoyed listening to it. I will likely listen to it again just to get it all straight in my head since the story is so complex.

Historia
Who was the real Diana? What was it like to be so privileged yet so anguished, so beloved yet so self-loathing, so spoiled yet so despairing? The Princess of Wales was all these things--far more complicated, conflicted, and intriguing a person than the wildly disparate saint or lunatic she is frequently portrayed to be.

The Author is a Sad Person
Revisado: 02-26-24
I finished listening to this book just so I could write a review. The author inserts herself into the book on a regular basis and wow, her view of the world is narrow, amoral and rooted in patriarchy. It is perfectly okay for a man to commit adultery, but not a woman. People without money and titles are definitely less human than those with titles, and certainly deserving of less in this world. I feel like the author should be forced to listen to this book about three times and even then I'm not sure she would figure out how warped her world view is. I'm quite certain that neither of the Windsor's were blameless in their disaster of a marriage but they did pretty darn well if the society they move in is as described by the author. The author makes British society seem like callous, spoiled, uneducated, self centered humans who exist only take up space in the world.
Horrible book. No attempt whatsoever to try to tell the story without bias.

Historia
In a powerful blend of history and contemporary reporting, New York Times reporter David Philipps traces the rich history of wild horses in America: their introduction by the Spanish conquistadors, their role in the epic battles between Native Americans and settlers, their vital place in American self-mythology. He travels through some of the most remote parts of the American West, known as Wild Horse Country, to investigate the wild horse's current dilemma, caught between the clashing ideals of ranchers, scientists, and more.

If you like Wild Horses Listen to This!
Revisado: 12-25-23
I've actually listened to this book twice. The author does an excellent job of helping the reader understand how we got to where we are now with wild horses. It's well worth listening to if you have any interest in wild horses.

Historia
Hedy Lamarr's exotic beauty was heralded across Europe in the early 1930s. Yet she became infamous for her nude scenes in the scandalous movie Ecstasy. Trapped in a marriage to one of Austria's munitions barons, a friend of Mussolini's who hid his Jewish heritage to become an "honorary Aryan" at the onset of World War II, Lamarr fled Europe for Hollywood, where she was transformed into one of film's most glamorous celebrities, appearing opposite such actors as Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and James Stewart.

The subject should have been interesting, instead it read like a synopsis of all her movies and their reviews. I finally gave up near the end...there was just nothing there.

Historia
Joan Robinson Hill was a world-class equestrian, a glamorous member of Houston high society, and the wife of Dr. John Hill, a handsome and successful plastic surgeon. Her father, Ash Robinson, was a charismatic oil tycoon obsessed with making his daughter's every dream come true. Rich, attractive, and reckless, Joan was one of the most celebrated women in a town infatuated with money, power, and fame. Then one morning in 1969, she fell mysteriously ill. The sordid events that followed comprise "what may be the most compelling and complex case in crime annals" (Ann Rule, best-selling author of The Stranger Beside Me).

Fascinating story
Revisado: 09-14-22
The story was fascinating, and as always with things Mimi Swartz does it was a story well told. The narrator was mostly okay but her pronunciation of some words was so jarring it was detrimental to the story. She pronounced Conoco wrong as well as Koch and multiple other words. It was very distracting.

Decades after Richard Ramirez left 13 dead and paralyzed the city of Los Angeles, his name is still synonymous with fear, torture, and sadistic murder. Philip Carlo's classic The Night Stalker, based on years of meticulous research and extensive interviews with Ramirez, revealed the killer and his horrifying crimes to be even more chilling than anyone could have imagined. The story of Ramirez is a bizarre and spellbinding descent into the very heart of human evil.

Interesting

I vaguely remembered this happening in California at the time but didn't really follow the story. It was interesting and well told but the narrater consistently mispronounced Hispanic and Portugese surnames which made it hard to listen to.
