Third Books Ruined the Series

It's sort of weird to have the final book of your series be little more than boring filler that only picks up at the end. Don't get me wrong though, that pick up at the end wasn't actually good and was little more than a middle finger to the reader and 99% of the characters. None of the build up, world building, or character developments of the first two books matters, since pretty much all of it is abandoned in this book. It almost feels like the author had a change of heart and decided he hated what he wrote in the first two and decided to nuke it here. I regret starting this series.

A boring entry and a worse character

So right off the bat, you can tell this is going to be little more than filler and training montages. I thought it was going to only start that way and would eventually transition into something better, but all the reviews dashed that hope.

I probably could have tolerated it if not for the most annoyingly voiced character in the history of audio books. The voice and cadence of the trainer’s voice, with that weird inflection she has towards the end of every sentence just drove me insane.

Not bad once you get past unnecessary elements

So I was a bit conflicted with this book (and the previous one) since I liked the overall story, but really could have done without the poorly done romance angles (not that there actually is a way to properly do harem elements). I had to roll my eyes when the MC felt jealousy and possible betrayal, despite repeatedly cheating with his personal succubus (most poly relationships aren't okay with you getting some on the side in secret). That being said, I was able to get past it, but also found out that this story has been essentially abandoned by the author, so I definitely don't recommend this.

Mixed bag

For the most part, I enjoy the storytelling of this series, even if this particular book strayed and the MC got a bit whiny. I like the world, powers and overall story, the writing is decent, but the narration sounds like a father trying to put his young kid to sleep with a bedtime story. He makes grown men sounds like adolescent children outside of Derek and the blacksmith

Good premise poorly executed

The only praise I can give the story is the premise, although that’s not saying much since the reluctant “I just want a peaceful life” isekai MC has been done a LOT. The MC seems more like a bored college student that just woke up than someone who just experienced 10 years of non-stop battle.

It’s a cross between the reluctant isekai hero trope and one punch man, but worse.

Good series that falls apart spectacularly

I really enjoyed reading/listening to these books, so it became that much more disappointing by the utter garbage that was an ending. I’m not sure how it can even be redeemed in a 4th book outside of telling everyone to pretend the ending of the third book was a bad totem dream.

More of the Same

This is more of a review of books 3 and 4, since both are fairly flawed in the same respects. It's a LOT of side story that ends up contributing nothing to the overall narrative, and that's not counting the huge amount of self-pitying whining from Eric. Any time he has a moment of accurate self reflection, another character conveniently justifies the it to him; similarly, if another character makes this observation about his character, he is able to justify it and derail the conversation. Eric/Halar loves to involve himself in other people's problems, but hates the inevitable responsibility that comes along with it.

These books would also likely be easily 1/3 shorter if not for Eric going off on mindless tangents. I've also come to hate anytime he returns to Karvalen, since it will almost always lead to more self-pity and him justifying terrible decisions (he often laments his terrible decisions, but he's often wrong about why they're terrible or which ones were mistakes).

Somewhat Rushed Ending

Unrealistic

It seems silly to expect a lot of realism in a post-apocalyptic zombie story, but I still find it hard to suspend my disbelief on a 13 year old girl becoming a Marine Corps icon who gets promoted to lieutenant and thinks getting shot with one .45 ACP from a handgun is equivalent to five 5.56 rounds. I had to stop listening every time someone said "Barbie gun."
