Historia
When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets.

A triumph!
Revisado: 01-26-24
Daniel Mason is masterful with language abs story and insight. This story follows a forest and a house with its various inhabitants through centuries.
There’s a supernatural aspect that pleases, gorgeous depictions of the woods and an awe-inspiring weaving of interconnected webs that tell stories of life, live, loss, death, continuity and change.
Highly recommend.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Beautifully told story of love
Revisado: 01-07-24
I found this story to be beautifully told. I loved the insights into life and love, in many permutations, suffering and joy. The characters were so engaging. I’ve never played video games, and one needn’t to love this story. I was carried away by its turns and revelations. Loved it.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

So disappointing
Revisado: 01-03-24
The story is interesting. Exceedingly loosely based on the day book entries of an actual midwife, Martha Ballard, in the late 1700s in Maine. Lawhon has taken all the liberties anyone would need to craft a terrific tale. Yet her writing is so mediocre that it takes all the joy out of reading this story. The narrator, similarly, has about two tones. It’s all so mediocre when it had the potential to be an excellent story. But would need a more skilled writer for that. It could be worse, I suppose. But very disappointing. Would not recommend.

Simple beauty in expert storytelling
Revisado: 12-17-23
Just a lovely story. It might strike one as simple, but the complexity of human emotion and relationships, the passage of time and the meaning in our lives is told in a way that Ann Patchett makes seem effortless.
I can’t imagine a more perfect narrator for this story than Meryl Streep. She was flawless.

The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

Historia
The lifeblood of any free society is persuasion: changing other people’s minds in order to change things. But America is suffering a crisis of faith in persuasion that is putting its democracy and the planet itself at risk. Anand Giridharadas takes us inside these movements and battles, seeking out the dissenters who continue to champion persuasion in an age of polarization. As the book’s subjects grapple with how to call out injustices while calling in those who don’t agree with them but just might one day, they point a way to healing, and changing, a fracturing country.

The writing is gorgeous. The story is that of the son of Nigerian immigrants growing up in Utah and Texas, then into young adulthood. Folarin expertly draws the reader into his character’s mind and we experience the poignancy of every moment. It will touch you deeply. And The Audible narration is extraordinary

Historia
The characters in Tasting the Past include a young Swiss scientist who set out to decode the DNA of every single wine grape in the world; Middle Eastern researchers who seek to discover the wines that King David drank; and a University of Pennsylvania academic who has spent decades analyzing wine remains. The science illuminates wine in ways no critic can, and demolishes some of the most sacred dogmas of the industry: well-known French grapes aren't especially noble.

Historia
Cameron Post feels a mix of guilt and relief when her parents die in a car accident. Their deaths mean they will never learn the truth she eventually comes to - that she's gay. Orphaned, Cameron comes to live with her old-fashioned grandmother and ultraconservative aunt Ruth. When she’s eventually outed, her aunt sends her to God’s Promise, a religious conversion camp that is supposed to “cure” her homosexuality. At the camp, Cameron comes face to face with the cost of denying her true identity.

I just couldn't stand the narration
Revisado: 09-12-18
I can't even review the story because I just can't stand the narration. The story may be wonderful, but I won't know until I get it in book or kindle form. Just can't listen to the audible version one more minute. The narrator has a prominent accent, I guess New York or Long Island, and it is so distracting and doesn't fit at all for a young girl from Montana. Her inflections are off and it's so awful to listen to that I absolutely can't finish the book. Her voice and accent just doesn't fit the story and is terribly distracting.
