Astounding and sad nonfiction, Top-Notch performances
Revisado: 06-08-23
This is an compelling and important account of the treatment of native Americans, and the betrayal and murder of members of members of the Osage tribe by an astounding cross-section of the non-tribe community. It’s a vivid reminder that men of all nations, including our own, are capable of “unimaginable”, yet real, inhumanity when we view others as lesser humans.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Solid mystery with satisfying twists
Revisado: 12-03-19
No spoilers here: this is more of a mystery novel than a thriller, with a couple of twists that are intriguing and satisfying, adding believable dimension to the characters. I was never bored since the core characters’ flaws are so engrossing. I recommend this book, particularly the audio version. And stick around for the interview with the author at the end.

Historia
It's 1933, and Prohibition has given rise to the American gangster. Bank robberies at gunpoint are commonplace, and kidnapping for ransom is the scourge of a lawless nation. With local cops unauthorized to cross state lines in pursuit and no national police force, safety for kidnappers is just a short trip on back roads they know well from their bootlegging days. George "Machine Gun" Kelly and his wife, Kathryn, are some of the most celebrated gangsters of their era.

An intriguing glimpse at an era, but the story fizzles
Revisado: 10-18-15
The story of the manhunt takes a while to get going and ultimately fizzles out. I suppose that may be a function of the fact that it's a true story, but it also reflects in part on the choices made by the author about what the focus of the story would and would not be. It's not bad, and one gains an interesting sense if the era in which the manhunt unfolded, but it's just less compelling than one would expect of a manhunt story involving a true-life character known as Machine Gun Kelly.

Historia
On a quiet fall evening in the small, peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovers an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms are taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, his friends, his family, the woman he loves, and the world as he knows it.

Outstanding narration and an entertaining story
Revisado: 10-18-15
Kristoffer Tabori's rendition of this classic story was one of my favorite audio book experiences yet! The story is exciting from the start, but Tabori makes even the small scenes and interior monologues compelling and tense. I hope he'll record more thrillers and dramas - he's truly gifted in this genre.

Historia
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

A turning point in American and world history comes to life
Revisado: 07-07-15
There is so much about that year and that war that I never knew, and this brought it (and George Washington!) to life! Thank you, David McCullough for your eloquence and your ability to tell the story with such vivid, human, authentic detail!
