Historia
Stephanie Grisham rose from being a junior press wrangler on the Trump campaign in 2016 to assuming top positions in the administration as White House press secretary and communications director, while at the same time acting as First Lady Melania Trump’s communications director and eventually chief of staff. Few members of the Trump inner circle served longer or were as close to the first family as Stephanie Grisham, and few had her unique insight into the turbulent four years of the administration, especially the personalities behind the headlines.

Fun Behind the Scenes “Look Book”
Revisado: 10-08-21
I really enjoyed this book for it’s straightforward take on Ms Grisham’s life.
However, I am of two-minds around her narrating the book herself. I have asked myself over and over - who better to read it? but also kept telling myself that none of us can help the quality of our own voices.

Historia
Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then...he hears the plot.

It’s on me....I kept listening....
Revisado: 05-31-21
I knew whodunnit about 1/3 of the way in, but just not how. And even after hearing the narration on the sample, I was still intrigued enough to grit my teeth and go on.
About the book, 3 stars. I wish I had bought the book and let my own “voice” compensate.

Historia
It had been raining for weeks. Maybe months. He had forgotten the last day that it hadn't rained, when the storms gave way to the pale blue of the Gulf sky, when the birds flew and the clouds were white and sunshine glistened across the drenched land. Following years of catastrophic hurricanes, the Gulf Coast - stretching from the Florida panhandle to the western Louisiana border - has been brought to its knees. The region is so punished and depleted that the government has drawn a new boundary ninety miles north of the coastline.

Loved The Book, Iffy on Author as Narrator
Revisado: 01-02-20
Outstanding book, went back and forth between Audible and reading on Kindle.
There were points where the narrator was Cohen and I let myself believe, but reverted to reading I couldn’t.
I’m suspecting that this was Smith’s first Audible book and decided to do his own narration. I understand but glad he chose Robin Bloodworth to read Desperation Road - another winner.
I’m thrilled to have found Smith and have become a big fan and evangelist (no pun intended as you’ll see).
Note: glad I read the short prequel prior to Rivers. It helped, but book stands alone without as well.
Here’s to the next Smith book I have just seen is coming in early 2020!

And they find another ally in Cora Frost, a widowed teacher who is raising her little girl, Emmy, by herself.

Wishing I had read rather than listened.....
Revisado: 09-12-19
Similar to “the book was better than the movie”, I am thinking I should have read rather than listened to This Tender Land.
I was disappointed in the narrator (a first for me) and consequently let it effect how I felt about the book. I loved every aspect of Ordinary Grace and listened to this newest book on the heels of finishing that one.
To be fair, this book picked up for me toward the end, but a little too late for me to save it.
I was appreciative of the sense of the 1930’s this book provided, but much of the dialogue seem forced and perhaps due to the narrator, overly dramatic and not sincere.
Am I put off from listening to the next William Kent Krueger? Never.

On the Fence.....but eventually succumbed.
Revisado: 03-25-19
I eventually found myself really liking this omnibus version, once I came to grips that this was not the narrator of my dreams.
However, with so many hours of listening, I eventually realized that Abernathy got better with each book.
My only complaint is that the author chose to interrupt the flow of the book by inserting himself at the end of each book. I believe that this might be his first dip in the audible waters, and I’m sure the temptation to tell us his thinking was overwhelming. It came off as egocentric and didn’t allow for the listener to enjoy the book in peace.
Bottom line, will read/listen more if available, but will think twice if an alternative narrator isn’t considered.
