I can't praise this highly enough
Revisado: 08-12-23
Brilliant writing with a lot of wit and depth, incredible voice acting, some of the best I've ever heard in thousands of hours of listening and I have to acknowledge the translator who seamlessly converted the language into perfect English vernacular.

Words on the Move opens our eyes to the surprising backstories to the words and expressions we use every day. Did you know that silly once meant "blessed"? Or that ought was the original past tense of owe? Or that the suffix -ly in adverbs is actually a remnant of the word like? And have you ever wondered why some people from New Orleans sound as if they come from Brooklyn?

Educational and Fun
Revisado: 06-25-17
Where does Words on the Move rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
For non-fiction, at the very top.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Not applicable.
What does John McWhorter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A he's also the writer, he perfectly captures all the humor and insights in the book. I'm sometimes disappointed when writers narrate their own books but he performed brilliantly.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Like, literally the best movie ever!
Any additional comments?
I've always been interested in language, semantics, etymology and lexicography and have read a number of books on the subject but Words on the Move is now at the top of my list. It actually changed my viewpoint on some elements of language and gave me many new insights. Thanks to the author for this wonderful work!

Historia
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Yikes!
Revisado: 11-04-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who are on the so-called left will probably love it.
What was most disappointing about Ken Follett’s story?
I've read all his books and think he's a brilliant writer but when writing about modern history his political bias makes him sound like the typical internet troll we see ranting on both the left and the right.
What about John Lee’s performance did you like?
He's amazing, I'd listen to practically anything he narrated.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Follett's craftsmanship as a writer can't be denied.
Any additional comments?
In my opinion extremism in politics or religion is a form of mental illness. I only wish there were a cure! I love Ken Follett and hate to see him suffer.

Historia
Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, 12 miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child’s electrifying new novel, Reacher - a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose - goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead. It wasn’t the welcome Reacher expected. He was just passing through, minding his own business. But within minutes of his arrival a deputy is in the hospital and Reacher is back in Hope.

Entertaining as always
Revisado: 07-16-13
Would you listen to Nothing to Lose again? Why?
Yes, Reacher novels are like action movies to me, always entertaining and stimulating.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Other than Jack Reacher, the "born again Christian" mogul was amusing in his pleasing facade and underlying sinister aspect.
What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?
Everything, he's one of my favorites with a great range of characters.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, it was just the expected fun Jack Reacher listen.
Any additional comments?
I normally don't write reviews but after reading some of the earlier reviews I almost didn't buy it. I discovered most of the negative reviews were based on ideological differences with the author and had nothing to do with the quality of the writing, so I wanted to assure potential readers that this book is consistent with the quality of his earlier books.

Robert Jordan's Knife of Dreams in October; George R.R. Martin's Feast for Crows in November; what's to complain about? Hopefully Paolini's fans will get interested in the genre and discover true masters of fantasy like these authors.

Disapointment
Revisado: 08-05-05
I really enjoyed the first two books in the series but wasn't able to enjoy this one as much. The homosexual love affair between the main characters was a bit repellant to me. I guess I get too involved with the characters and want to identify with them but as I'm heterosexual the homosexuality sort of spoils it for me.

Great reader, wonderful book.
Revisado: 07-26-05
As a fan of Fantasy a la Geaorge R. R. Martin, Robert Jordan and J. R. R. Tolkien I highly recommend this book to any afficianado of fantasy. Just because fantasy often has a similar formula does not mean each story can't be appreciated on its own merit. The Magician's Guild has a nice balance of adventure, humor and romance and the characters are uniquely crafted and well portrayed. I actually emailed the author (she has a nice website) and asked her if she could help to ensure that the rest of the trilogy are produced for Audible.
