Live of a master, read beautifully
Revisado: 06-04-16
Anyone who loves Roald Dahl's books will, I think, be fascinated by the way he tells some of the story's of his early adulthood. He lived a very interesting life but, in the way of the best story tellers, he also observed and was interested the life of the people around him and he was consequently able to make you feel as though you were there, meeting these people with him.
The narrator is fabulous, one of the best I've ever heard. He sounds exactly as I would have imagined Dahl himself would sound, with a cadence and tone perfect for Dahl's witty and insightful thoughts on life.

Enjoyable romp despite the narration
Revisado: 03-12-16
Of those I've read, this is by far the best. Belinda makes an excellent addition and although I found the word puzzle they labour over to be child's play, the rest of the mystery was quite satisfying.

Ok story but terrible narration
Revisado: 03-09-16
The narrator is a very unfortunate choice, every single one of her accents grates and sounds false.
Story is quite good, although the social commentary is quite insipid at times, well constructed and thought out reasons for who commits the crime.

Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play.

Not quite so cosy
Revisado: 03-06-16
I was a bit disappointed by the level of swearing, it was completely superfluous and felt like an unnecessary effort to make it more modern. Definitely wouldn't be comparing it to Agatha Christie although the author clearly wanted you to see them as of the same ilk. The narrator was the only highlight.

Historia
Roald Dahl had an abiding love for and interest in nature. He kept notes about the habits of moles and foxes, the colour and song of birds and the different flowers, plants and berries that blossomed in the countryside around his home, Gipsy House, throughout the year. In the last year of his life he worked on a diary. But what was originally intended to be a few lines turned into a memorable account of the passing year.

This is a beautiful series of vignettes following the months of the year, filled with wisdom, wit and reverence.
If you can't sleep or you need to remember just how beautiful ordinary things are - this is the book for you.

Whilst organising a mock murder hunt for the village fete hosted by Sir George and Lady Stubbs, a feeling of dread settles on the famous crime novelist Adriane Oliver. Call it instinct, but it's a feeling she just can't explain...or get away from. Revisado: 12-16-14
What didn’t you like about David Suchet’s performance?
He is fabulous in the tv show but Audiobooks require so many voices and such quick transitions and so many of his voices for characters were awful! Especially for Sir George and some of the women.

Damaged self esteem
Revisado: 05-08-14
Would you ever listen to anything by L. A. Fiore again?
No. The main female characters are so depressingly damaged in their self esteem and perception of what they deserve from these guys they're hooking up with. Maybe she's trying to set us up for major empowerment but god it's painful to listen to women who seem to be really degrading themselves both with their own thoughts and with the attention they seek from others. Yes having a crush on someone who seems unreachable can make us miserable but this seems on par with Bella in twilight deciding suicide is better than not being with a vampire - unrealistic and downright degrading.

Historia
An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot's interest. But then he saw the list of stolen and vandalized items: a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack, and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup. The list made absolutely no sense at all. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at work, why was everyone at the hostel so frightened?

Enter Miss Lemon!
Revisado: 02-28-13
What did you like best about this story?
I love that the indefectible Miss Lemon (Poirot's secretary) not only gets a backstory but finally makes a mistake. Of all the minor characters Agatha Christie weaves into her narratives (she's in most Poirot novels) Miss Lemon and her filing system has always appealed to me as the perfect match for Poirot's meticulous nature. Agatha Christie clearly had a ball destroying Poirot's calm and he sets out to solve a clever case of theft just to get his well-ordered domain back. But before long there's murder thrown into the mix...
What does Hugh Fraser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Many Poirot fans will recognise Hugh Fraser's voice from some of the TV adaptations as Captain Hastings.

Revisado: 06-25-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I could only cope with a couple of hours of this book. Such a whining, snivelling, self pitying character has never before be written with such grandeur. He's sick, no one else knows he's sick yet he expects someone to miraculously arrive or call and when they do (god know's why) he is beastly to them.
Would you ever listen to anything by M. C. Beaton again?
No.
