Difficult , Rewarding
Revisado: 11-10-21
If only the author could find a way to tell his story with fewer words, it would be a masterpiece of modern fantasy. The heavy Melvillian prose, plethora of characters with similar names, and leaps around timeliness and POV are especially difficult to follow on audio, but the narration is brilliant.

Historia
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

Fine performances by author and narrator. I'm gaining appreciation for Abercrombie as I progress through this series, which develops deep characters and explores dark themes in human nature. Highly recommended.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

So many tragic themes are weaved into this tale. I am sad for the injustices inflicted by colonialists on indigenous peoples and grateful that they continue to share their stories with us.
