Historia
Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali.

Worth reading. Excellent narrator. The author uses the most beautiful language to describe the ugliest situations and it works well. Karunatilaka builds a fascinate afterlife within a mystery of how the title character got there. A stellar work.

Historia
Isaac Fitzgerald has lived many lives. He's been an altar boy, a bartender, a fat kid, a smuggler, a biker, a prince of New England. But before all that, he was a bomb that exploded his parents' lives—or so he was told. In Dirtbag, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald, with warmth and humor, recounts his ongoing search for forgiveness, a more far-reaching vision of masculinity, and a more expansive definition of family and self.

Everyone should read this.

At times the book feels like listening in on the author’s therapy session, but Fitzgerald’s talent makes that such a plus. Excellent essays. A must read.
