Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 08-13-24
Likable characters and an intriguing plot. It's not necessary to be a big wrestling fan to enjoy the story, although I bet it reads differently for them. Great pacing and the narrator voiced the characters well.

Historia
There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security prison: 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates.

Decent story
Revisado: 08-01-24
I found the protagonist to be entirely too gullible and she consistently gaslit herself.
If this were a horror movie, Brooke would NOT be the final girl. She allowed herself to be mislead time and time again, and it was a really distracting character flaw that did nothing to endear her to me as the reader.
The story is decent enough, although the twists weren't entirely unexpected. The narrator did a good job with the material.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Past, present, and future
Revisado: 02-11-24
I enjoyed the story. The performances were great and the plot interesting. The people left on earth represented what was, the people awakened 500 years later than expected were the present, and, to avoid spoilers, there is the future represented too.

Too heavy handed
Revisado: 01-17-24
It felt like there were a couple basic points of view that were prominently displayed and then just hammered flat. It was unnecessary and off-putting.
The main antagonist seemed to be made up of characters from three of Mr. Koontz's previous books. It was distracting to draw such a clear parallel to these other characters while listening to this.
The narrator did a decent job, but the way he voiced some of the characters and voiced their method of speech was eyebrow raising.
I've read and now listened to many of Mr. Koontz's books, and I've enjoyed the majority of them. This one fell flat for me.

Soon, they return from the grave, and ask for blood. And with blood, they stop being dead. They continue to remain the children they once were, but only for a short time, as they need more blood to live. The average human body holds 10 pints of blood, so the inevitable question for parents everywhere becomes: How far would you go to bring your child back?

Grim tale
Revisado: 01-03-24
This was a solemn and grim story. A mysterious illness kills all young children. Just reading through the first act of this book is sad. The descriptions of the parents' grief is striking. The rest follows the actions they, as well as others, such as doctors and police, take once their children return from the dead...so long as they remain fed.

Classic Koontz
Revisado: 01-01-24
I've enjoyed Dean Koontz's books for a long time. Long enough that some of the books I own call him something to the effect of, "the least know best-selling author."
It was fun to revisit Phantoms as an audio book. The narrator does a decent job with the voices, although it took some getting used to.

Bottom of the barrel humor that isn't funny
Revisado: 09-16-23
Prank calls that are racist and profanity-laced aren't funny.
Perhaps at first, the show was humorous, but in an effort to remain relevant and seem "edgy," the content creator has crossed a line.
I'm surprised that this kind of content is something Audible allows on its platform.

Revisado: 09-12-23
I listened to the audio drama, with Aaron Paul voicing Billy, and wanted to continue the series. While I missed all the voice actors, the narrator did a good job taking over for all the characters. I felt it was a solid story, a little convoluted, but I enjoyed listening to it all unfold.

A lot of characters in a twisty tale
Revisado: 05-07-23
It can take me a bit to remember which character is which when there are so many in an audible book, but once done, this is an enjoyable book. I thought the narrator did a great job voicing everyone; she nailed the tones for the more aggravating characters. Perhaps not an entirely believable plot, but still entertaining. I have not watched the miniseries yet.
