Historia
There is Thorn, a shaman himself. He lives to pass down his wisdom and his stories - to teach those who would follow in his footsteps. There is Heather, the healer who, in many ways, holds the clan together. There is Elga, an outsider and the bringer of change. And then there is Loon, the next shaman, who is determined to find his own path. But in a world so treacherous, that journey is never simple - and where it may lead is never certain.

Amazingly detailed yet poignant
Revisado: 02-23-22
I’d been wanting to read a fiction book that delved into the life and times of Stone Age people after reading a number of well researched nonfiction books on the time period…and this book was perfect in every way.
The prose is descriptive as well as being poignant. And the humans are dealt with in a very realistic and humanistic way. They are not caricatures, as they might be in another authors hands. The interplay between humans and animals and nature is very detailed but flows well within the story. It’s obvious this author has put a ton of time into researching the material and it shows throughout but he is also quite capable of writing such fully developed characters and a really epic narrative. I’m so glad I found this book and have recommend it to many friends.

Historia
Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett was the definition of a golden boy. With good looks and an aptitude for music, he was a charismatic child who fast became a teenage leader in 1960s England. Along with three school chums - Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason - he formed what would become Pink Floyd.

Story of Syd
Revisado: 02-13-22
If you’re wanting to get a deep dive into the life and times of Syd Barrett, this has got to be the book to pick up (or listen to in this case) It’s very well researched and detailed. Like Barrett’s life, the book has mainly two halves. The first half analyses and interprets his early life, influences, creativity and peak with Pink Floyd’s first album and singles. After that, the second half of his life (and the book) is detailed; from his solo albums to his slow steady decline into mental health issues and a semi-secluded life. The last quarter of the book (like Barrett’s life) does become a bit sad and dreary.
That being said, the author has many excellent insights and information about everything from the psychedelic era in London to the troubled relationship between the commercialization and commodifying of art and music and those creative souls caught in that machinery.
If I had one negative criticism, it would be that I don’t think enough was written about how the other members of Pink Floyd truly felt about Syd’s demise and ouster from the band. It is certainly covered but I would’ve liked a little more in-depth input from the other band mates in what has to be considered one of the most difficult decisions in music history. It literally changed the direction and sound of the band.
Very good read though. A must for anyone intrigued with Syd Barrett and that early groundbreaking Pink Floyd output.

Best-selling author Brian Fagan brings early humans out of the deep freeze with his trademark mix of erudition, cutting-edge science, and vivid storytelling. Cro-Magnon reveals human society in its infancy, facing enormous environmental challenges - including a rival species of humans, the Neanderthals. For ten millennia, Cro-Magnons lived side by side with Neanderthals, an encounter that Fagan fills with drama.

Fascinating and captivating
Revisado: 11-12-21
As some others have said, there is a fair amount of speculation peppered throughout this book. That being said, Brian Fagan is a well respected author of archeology as well as a professor of anthropology. He’s not a quack. It’s safe to say his speculations are grounded in the most up-to-date research available. There’s a lot we will probably never know about our cro-magnon (and Neanderthal) brothers and sisters but a little speculation about certain aspects of their lives shouldn’t deter someone from what is a truly captivating read about the life and times of these Paleolithic people.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Staggering brilliance
Revisado: 10-27-21
Gritty, harsh, vivid, violent, profound, poignant, poetic prose delivered by a master of his craft. And the narrator was excellent too. I listened to this on a long drive out west and was mesmerized the whole time. Like any really good book, it’s layered and deep….and leaves you questioning and pondering for days.

Soap opera in disguise
Revisado: 10-27-21
This book tries to be like something in the vein of Dan Simmons’ The Terror, a historical fiction horror and supernatural tale of a real event. It fails on all accounts. The historical aspects are not very detailed, and the horror is not very terrifying. But the worst are the characters. They’re one dimensional and predictable and seemingly out of a romance novel. The whole book has a bad soap opera quality to it. Not at all what I’d hoped for or wanted.
