This one was unsatisfying. I didn't feel that the stories or characters moved forward very much. Despite the title, only a very short bit at the beginning was actually about the Wind Runner There was lots of blacksmithing. It was not worth being a stand-alone volume, in my opinion. It is, however, part of the greater journey, so we must continue.

Steampunk political thriller w/ a dash of romance

This was a very good book Crafters, landowners, and corporations maneuver for political dominance in a well-structured world. A sort of low stakes political thriller, with a dash of romance if you will. Likeable characters fighting against corruption. I thought the narration was solid and easy to listen to. The pacing of the book is slower than your typical thriller but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I would definitely read another book set in this world.

I like the premise and some of the initial characters but the story is all over the place and changes tone multiple times. A lot of pages don't contribute much to the story. First books in series need to be solid, complete books and this did not feel like a complete book.

I read this straight through in 2 days. Well paced action, an entire, mystery. The writing is more sophisticated than previous works I've read by the author and this series comes as a refreshing intermission to the Silver Ships series. The performance by Nichole poole was clearly articulated, paced well and very easy to understand at multiple speeds; it was easy to distinguish the characters from the narration and Poole is particularly good with both elderly and child characters.

This was a refreshing change-up from the typical science fiction and fantasy fare. The story is interesting, the pacing is relaxing and the story meanders through a mystery that you have to unpack with minimal exposition and amidst lot of philosophical ponderings. The world building was really cool, and I would welcome more stories set there if the author was so inclined. I thought the narration was oddly slow and halting; however, once I bumped the speed up to about 115% - 120% it was a lot better.

A Tangled Road to Justice Audiolibro Por Olan Thorensen arte de portada

Fast-paced, space-western action-thriller

Olan Thorensen is back with something a little different. A serial "western" series set in space. Like his previous books, Thorensen has created a really interesting milieu set in a speculative future. In this future Mankind has spread into space with the colonies at the farthest reaches existing in a 'wild west' frontier setting where centralized authority is still lacking. Horses exist along side electric vehicles, and technology is mixed-in with old-fashioned agrarian culture. This "old west" is filled with a diverse set of people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Our protagonist is paired with an agent who has an obsession with ancient 20th and 21st century western movies and their job is to go out to the frontier planets and covertly "solve problems" where local law enforcement is lacking. Let's just say "you don't want to mess with these guys!" The setting is pretty brilliant, and Thorensen uses it to draw parallels to the modern day libertarian vs. government debate. Also like his previous books he's set a fairly light story there (and I mean really light). It's written at about the level of sophistication of an actual old Western movie. There's lots of shop talk about guns and ammunition, and a climactic battle pitting rifles and space armor against hovercraft and hay bales. I think the setting is what makes the books, and I wish the story there had a little more meat to it but it is what it is. Good reading for an airplane and the best part is you can read the books individually with no cliff-hangers. It's serial style, like an old western TV show.

In 'Tales' Thorensen is bringing the story back to the roots of the series and what made it great. He's expanding the world, building new countries in it, introducing new characters and putting Joseph back in the laboratory to invent things. This book consists of three major sections: In the first third, we go back to earth to learn how the news of the disappearing aircraft (in book 1) was received, and we learn the answer to a nagging question: "Were survivors deposited on other planets besides Anyar?. In the second third, we are filled in on the parts of the final battle in book 4 that we didn't get to see and are introduced to new characters and some basic politics are set up for the new Cadelia. The final third moves the story forward from book 5, where we follow the returning Narthani and are introduced to a new character from earth who also landed on Anyar and has just heard about Joseph - and you won't believe what his training is in!. You also won't believe what Joseph has "invented" now (or maybe you will). We also get a brief but very interesting insight into how the mysterious 'eggs' work. This is a transitional book that answers a lot of fan questions and sets up the next arc (which looks great). Seriously, don't start the next book in the series before you catch up here. Most important, Thorensen's writing has improved markedly, particularly in the last third; it's more tightly, written and we no longer have to suffer everyone marveling at how amazing Joseph is and talking about him when he's not there.

This was quite an odd book. Set in a disabled generation ship that has been stuck in a dying binary star-system for over half a millennium, the human population has devolved into two highly unequal classes, who have further divided into two primary, opposing factions. Simultaneously, the ships AI has fractured into several, strangely anthropomorphic and oddly possessive entities referred to as "Angels" who seem to represent alphas (males?) who are each trying to be the ultimate AI that takes the ship forward in the future. At it's most basic, the story is a complex fable about the divisions between science and religion. However, it also explores power in interpersonal relationships to a great extent. In summary: I think the book is trying to address an awful lot issues with an awful lot of symbology at once. The premise is very good, the world is very cleverly crafted, the visual narrative is very rich, and some the characters were, sadly, a little flat. The flow can shift abruptly at times, which makes it a bit challenging for an audio book and may result in some rewinding. It was not until about 2/3 of the way into the book that it really started to gel but after that it seemed to flow better. It's good enough that I'm going to read the second book.

Great premise, good humor, and a very engaging story. We are rooting for Bob almost from day one. I admit I was having some doubts in the first couple chapters but after that I was all-in. My only complaint is an almost complete lack of women. Even an guy who's an AI needs an alluring female counterpart to talk to, and I've heard that this is addressed in later books. Looking forward to reading more 'Bobiverse' books.
