Not as boring as people say

More than a few reviewers here and on Amazon thought the book had some slow parts. I did not feel this way. The reader took some getting used to, but I was hooked after the first hour. By 3 hours in I was fully engaged as the pieces came together. If you post-apocalyptic, virtual reality sci-fi you will love this book.

I tried so hard to like this book

I won't disparage anyone who enjoyed this book, but despite wanting to like it so much, I could barely bring myself to listen to it. Scott Brick is one of my favorite readers, but even he couldn't save this book. The overall plot has some interesting ideas, but the characters are copy and pasted cliches from every hollywood movie you've ever seen. The writing is tedious and flat. I thought if I had to listen to the phrase "vast machine" one more time I was going to throw up.

Intelligent, raw cyber-punk in the spirit of Gibson and Stephenson

The great thing about Gibson and Stephenson is that their books aren't just pulp sci-fi, they are filled with interesting ideas about how technology changes people and society. Morgan's book carries on that tradition, building a fascinating world and filling it with interesting people and situations.

Morgan takes the concept of "sleeving" and introduces all kinds of interesting questions about human relations, business, death, heaven and hell. The detective story and high tech violence are just icing on the cake.

Now one of my top 10 audible favorites

I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Rather than simply presenting scientific material, the author is really on a personal journey to learn more about himself by studying neuroscience. I found the material fascinating, and the presentation genuine and sincere. The reader is very clear and pleasant to listen to. This is a book I'll be keeping on my ipod for a second listen.

A pleasure to listen to

If you enjoyed the first 2 books you'll love this one as well. Patrick Tull continues to provide really superb narration: he excels at weaving through the naval jargon, and pays particular attention to the dialog.
