Dying the first time sucked. Matt's trying to avoid a repeat performance. Having to save the world after being reincarnated is rather enjoyable. In a soul-crushing responsibility kind of way. For Matt, joining Earth's last line of defense in a magical realm might just be what he was re-born for.

Loved it. Need more!
Revisado: 01-23-25
Tao Wong masterfully straddles the line between slice of life and LitRPG action. I finished it in one sitting and I immediately went to get book two.
The characters are more than cliches and even a minor villain has depth of character. The book doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger but you definitely feel you want more.
Neil Hellegers is an excellent narrator, well suited to this book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and I chose to write this review.

The entire idea is stupid. Lose the sound effects. Write a decent book. If I want to watch TV I won’t buy an audiobook.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

A city is hit by a sudden and strange epidemic of "white blindness", which spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there social conventions quickly crumble and the struggle for survival brings out the worst in people.

I fell asleep
Revisado: 10-23-23
I must admit that I fell asleep listening to this book and missed the rape scenes but felt no compunction to return to them. My main feeling throughout the book was "This isn't going anywhere." People became blind and were treated badly until everybody was blind then society collapsed and that was mostly it. The small group of characters we follow in the book seemed cardboard cut-outs that changed very little. Eventually I had twenty minutes left and I was wondering if there was a sequel or if the book would just peter out.
Of course the author chose the easiest solution and came up with a happy ending, which left me dissatisfied. There was a fair amount of moralising internal monologue by the characters which I attributed to the author writing for a different language group with probably a different social history. Possibly something of the original story was lost in the translation, or not, but it felt off.

Suddenly on the far side of the Milky Way, Admiral Deborah Allen Riker and her crew find themselves neck-deep in trouble...again! It turns out the galaxy is a very dangerous place. Threats come in all shapes and sizes. For Admiral Dare, peace and protecting the innocent is the price of being human. It is a precious commodity that must be paid for with the blood and tears of those willing and able to fight for it.

It just got worse
Revisado: 02-27-23
I should've expected this after the second book was a disappointment, but I never learn. Firstly, the humour that I didn't find humourous in the first or second book now includes pop references to Dune, Aliens, Star Trek and others. Unfortunately this didn't improve it. In this book Admiral Deborah Allen Riker suddenly has a number of PhD's and fighter pilot experience and she can now defeat an alien threat that was unstoppable up to this point. I found this a very unsatisfactory ending to a mediocre series.
The narration was fine.

Historia
Newly reinstated Captain Deborah Allen Riker (a.k.a. Admiral Dare) has been called many things over the years. Risk-averse is not one of them. When she and her badly crippled starship found themselves lost in the middle of an ocean of uncharted stars, with the fate of the galaxy on the line, facing enemies from the past, present, and future.... She did what any Riker would do....She attacked.

More of what I didn't like in book 1
Revisado: 02-27-23
This time the characters are in a colony ship running away from some bad guys and then there are also saboteurs. It began to feel a bit like Battlestar Galactica (the new series, not the old one). The characters haven't changed or grown in any way and now there is a love triangle.... I didn't really enjoy the humour because it had grown old from book 1. There is also a fair amount of telling about what has happened, rather than showing it happening. I was hoping the style of the book would improve from that of book 1 but that was not to be.

D&D and more
Revisado: 02-27-23
The book has the feeling of a D&D adventure with a fair deal of character development. I love the fact that the characters aren't paper-cut-out stereotypes. I haven't read the Adventurer series that this is the back-story to but still found this book to be enjoyable. Lots of action and the narration is also great.

Meet Threadbare. He is 12 inches tall, full of fluff, and really, really bad at being a hero. Magically animated and discarded by his maker as a failed experiment, he is saved by a little girl. But she's got problems of her own, and he might not be able to help her. Fortunately for the little golem, he's quick to find allies, learn skills, gain levels, and survive horrible predicaments. Which is good, because his creator has a whole lot of enemies …

Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

Idiotic MC does idiotic things because podcast
Revisado: 01-25-23
The main character is an idiot. He follows the instructions given to him by a podcast (that converses with him) to do idiotic things. I thought the story would be something like this except the podcast would suggest sensible things that slowly became more sinister. No, this was straight into stupidity. I did not bother to finish
