Historia
Why are humans the only species to have escaped—only very recently—the subsistence trap, allowing us to enjoy a standard of living that vastly exceeds all others? And why have we progressed so unequally around the world, resulting in the great disparities between nations that exist today? Galor’s gripping narrative explains how technology, population size, and adaptation led to a stunning “phase change” in the human story a mere two hundred years ago.

Excellent and efficient articulation of how and why certain geographic areas have developed faster that others.
A careful and scholarly, yet accessible, work.

Historia
Before 1870, humanity lived in dire poverty, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: invention sprinted forward, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870-2010 ended, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression, uncertainty, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo.

Historia
The spread of capitalism worldwide has made people wealthier than ever before. But capitalism's future is far from assured. Capitalism at Risk draws on discussions with business leaders around the world to identify 12 potential disruptors of the global market system. Presenting examples of companies already making a difference, the authors explain how business must serve both as innovator and activist - developing corporate strategies that effect change at the community, national, and international levels.

Waste of $40 and hours of my listening time.
Revisado: 08-13-20
I was SO excited to read this book and I am totally disappointed.
This book was shockingly inadequate and I am puzzled how it entered a second edition. The book shows almost no theoretical sophistication (a trait I expect from Academics) and was incredibly naive. I cannot convey how many sections were posed as “business leaders should... could...”.
The book should have been a singular Harvard Business Review article outlining what the executives said were the top pressing issues of the day not a book.
I do not recommend this text. The topic is highly important, the treatment here super inadequate.

Helpful, relevant, and timely
Revisado: 02-18-18
Would you listen to The Million-Dollar, One-Person Business again? Why?
Yes, I actually have already done so three times! Pofeldt does a great job drawing out the relevancy of different businesses and letting the owners speak for themselves.
What about Elaine Pofeldt’s performance did you like?
Elaine reads well and has a good voice.
Any additional comments?
One of the more useful books if you are looking to (or have) start a business.
