Unexpectedly touching. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I was not expecting to be as impressed by Assist as I was. Enjoyable, sincere with the perfect sprinkling of humor at the appropriate moments. My only criticism would be that Smokes character was not adequately concluded upon in the end, given the amount of attention he received throughout the book.

Historia
He's the type of man she should be running far away from. A man she has no business getting tangled with personally. And still, she wants him and all the intoxicating ways of his wild world. Giving away his heart was never part of the deal when it came to women. It was only supposed to be about pleasure. Nothing else and nothing more. He's in for a rude awakening when his world collides with a woman as bold, assertive, and determined as he is.

Swing and a miss, but performance was wonderful.
Revisado: 04-09-24
This book missed the mark for me. While I’m not familiar with BDSM, this was not the main problem. I felt the overall story had no depth. Too much time was spent on the erotic scenes and not nearly enough developing the characters. Anyone can write a sex scene, but not everyone can bring the storyline to life without relying on these as a crutch. I was expecting more from this author, but unfortunately I was bored - which is truly surprising considering the subject matter.

His pockets were stuffed, and his accounts were limitless, affording him luxuries that not everyone had when it came to me. He didn't flinch at the notion that he had to pay to play. It enticed him. That was my type. He was my type. But he knew no boundaries. His quest commenced the second our eyes met, my body hypnotizing him and everyone else in the room around us. He was as confident as he was persistent, tireless in his efforts to retrieve the one part of me that I'd buried for safekeeping. And, once he had it in his grasp, like every other man I'd shamefully given it to, he crushed it.

Historia
Soledad Barnes has her life all planned out. Because, of course, she does. She plans everything. She designs everything. She fixes everything. She’s a domestic goddess who's never met a party she couldn't host or a charge she couldn't lead. The one with all the answers and the perfect vinaigrette for that summer salad. But none of her varied talents can save her when catastrophe strikes, and the life she built with the man who was supposed to be her forever, goes poof in a cloud of betrayal and disillusion.

Okay, impressive at times but not mind blowing.
Revisado: 03-19-24
I loved the moments that focused on the complications in the main characters’ lives. However, their actual romance was mediocre. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would have enjoyed more time being spent on the more interesting parts. For example, seeing more interactions between the kids and how Juda and Soledad navigate blending their already blended families instead of dedicating so much time Soledad’s sisters would have been better. Her sisters did not add much value to the story.
Overall, I think it was a good book and the performance by the narrators was superb.

Historia
Year after year after year, I trick myself into believing that I’m over it—that I’m over him. Then I see his face, and the feelings we once shared resurface. We were young, and we were in love, but it was a love I was willing to do anything for. He was someone I was willing to do anything for. Suddenly, he decided that my love wasn’t enough. While he went on with his life, mine was always stuck on pause. Then, I decided that love waits for no one and allowed it into my world again.

Okay - Paulette’s story was so poor
Revisado: 11-21-23
I’m sorry but Paulette was written poorly. How can someone so privileged have been so stupid? To allow yourself to be blackmailed because you had an abortion that cannot be proven by anyone over a decade later is nonsensical. I’m 90% of the way through with the story and I don’t think I can stomach another Paulette chapter. We could have done without this character.

Historia
Stella Shakespeare isn’t having a good day, or month come to think of it. She’s been unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend, cut off from the bank of dad and at at thirty-two years old, she doesn’t know what she’s doing with her life. What Stella really wants is to find love. She wants all-consuming, can’t-think-about-anything-else, can’t-even-manage-to-eat kind of love. What she found beside her in bed that morning wasn’t love. But when a tall, handsome man in a well-fitting suit walks into her life, she thinks she’s finally found The One.

Enjoyable story, okay performance
Revisado: 10-27-23
I enjoyed the story overall. I loved the characters. I could have done with a better narrator though. I don’t think the author did the story justice reading it - she was mostly monotone and sounded like she was reading instead of transporting me to another world. I’m sure there are plenty of more talented artists out there who would have loved the opportunity to narrate this story.

Historia
Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn.

Disappointing, mediocre.
Revisado: 10-17-23
I really wanted to like this book; but that was not meant to be. The beginning was okay, and it had one or two redeeming moments throughout, but overall the story was bland and unimaginative, at times preachy. I was expecting more from this author.

Historia
Carl Weber is a New York Times best-selling author who’s made a name for himself with wildly entertaining works marked by his trademark wit and storytelling panache. In The Choir Director, Bishop T.K. Wilson is banking on dynamic new choir director Anthony Mackie to reverse the failing congregation’s fortunes. But while Anthony’s got more than enough chops to raise a heavenly chorus, he’s also got a weakness for the ladies that could make the Devil himself stand up and take notice.

Carl Weber doesn’t like women
Revisado: 08-13-23
I’ve read over 10 of his novels and I stick by this conclusion after this book. Monique’s story is completely unrealistic - we are expected to believe the same woman who could figure out a financial scandal by herself would also betray her husband so easily? In First Lady, she was proven to be well grounded and shrewd (not easily fooled by people), but he undoes all of this character development in this story. There were a 100 different ways to make her story even more interesting. Sadly this was not one of them. I’ve noticed a trend of belittling women in Carl’s books and this one was the same. Only reason my rating isn’t lower is because the other plots in the story were fine and the overall performance was good.
