Historia
Surrounded by unfamiliar politics and long-held enemies, Verene discovers that some at the Academy want her gone by whatever means necessary. As the threats grow ever more sinister, she starts to question all of her assumptions. The hardened prince might just be her best hope of survival and — even more shockingly — he might be right about her power. But as danger grows in the shadows, Verene isn't the only one in danger. If she wants to save both her old kingdom and the new one she's starting to love, she must uncover her hidden powers and take her true place among the mages.

Excellent example of fantasy, mystery, and romance.
Revisado: 03-12-25
This is an excellent book series and needs to be elevated to elite book status. I think this will become one of my go to recommendations. The characters are believable for their age, the plot is captivating, and you can share it with anyone. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to see if Melanie Cellier has written anything else.

Fantastic story
Revisado: 02-01-25
The whole trilogy is wonderful and feels very human. I especially like that the author isn't afraid to have characters you've come to love pass on the alter of excellent story telling.

Entertaining, interesting, and honest
Revisado: 07-08-24
I adore Caitlyn, she's an excellent communicator and poses some incredible questions about the way modern cultures view death. This book does have some brief mentions of death related topics that made my husband squirm on hearing them, but it's all good information as long as you're expecting it.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Every book I've read or listened to from Brandon Sanderson contains incredible fantasy worlds and people I almost swear I've met. Thoroughly enjoyable, and adult themed without being excessive.

Historia
The simple truth is that PTSD can be extremely debilitating - not just for the person who has experienced trauma firsthand, but for their partners, as well. And while there are many books written for those suffering from PTSD, there are few written for the people who love them. In Loving Someone with PTSD, renowned trauma expert Aphrodite Matsakis presents concrete skills and strategies for the partners of those with PTSD.

Content feels dated
Revisado: 11-30-22
I was really only able to get a few minutes into the book and it seemed to be focusing exclusively on media's portrayal of a male soldier's PTSD. The author also struggles with writing to "someone with PTSD" and writes it as though you are the partner to a man as opposed to having any other relationship. This book might be helpful to someone, but it felt like false advertising to me.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Great! (just maybe not for kids)
Revisado: 07-10-20
The story exudes death positivity without holding back on aspects of death, and working with death, that are difficult. Great book, but there is a fair amount of language and vivid descriptions that make it better suited for an older audience.

This was the only book I was required to read in high school that I enjoyed. The morals are great, the characters jump off the page, and it's an amazing look at this time frame through the eyes of a kid.

Historia
Beelzebub, the prince of demons, is bored. It's his destiny to one day rule the dark underworld known as the Red Realm, but it's sooo boring down there. All he wants to do is lay around all day in the lava pits (ahhh), boss everyone around (rude!), and maybe play a cruel prank (or two). But Beelzebub's father has had it with his son's nasty attitude. No one backtalks the Red King. NO ONE. A disgraced Beelzebub is banished by his father and cursed to spend his days in the worst place either of them can imagine. EARTH.

It's a fun story, but it feels like it skips some timeline details. The performances are great and it's an interesting concept.
