This book (who series, really) is absolutely perfect. There should be no debate about whether or not you should read it. Just do. I was completely sucked in to the time period, the places, the characters, the politics. Spellbinding.

But I had to read the second book on audio, for lack of time, and I felt that the voice actress did Lisa Bergren a huge disfavor. The characters’ tones never changed, even though Bergren’s writing certainly demands a variety of tone. Any foreign word (of which there were a lot, as we’re traveling through Europe) was COMPLETELY slaughtered—painfully so, and repeatedly. It was distracting, how badly she pronounced anything French. Even one of the main characters’ names—Pierre de Richelieu—was pronounced painfully and DIFFERENTLY every time it was said. “day Ri”shay”loo”, “Riche-loo,” “riSHAYlooo,” etc. There was no continuity.

And nevermind the intensity and force with which every line of dialogue was delivered!

Please. This is a perfect book. Don’t listen to this audio of it. It is worth staying up late into the night to physically read the pages of Bergren’s captivating writing.
