great show
Revisado: 09-14-23
These guys and gal are great. super entertaining and informative. It's conservative leaning, but logic is a big part of their conversations. it's not scripted. they pick topics and then talk about them for 5 to 10 minutes each. listen to it on the radio every morning but sometimes miss it so i come here to get my show.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Second time listening
Revisado: 12-23-20
The first time it was tough to get started. The story is very thick, by that I mean there is a lot you have to pay attention too to grasp what is going on in the beginning. The book starts 5 times i think. in ancient times, then the 3 main characters, and then the assassin (or something like that). Then starts over again. The story flips between these 4 characters through the entire book. Plus other random and side characters too.
Lots of strange names, strange ideas. But that's because the world building is done on a massive scale compared to other books. Not like an over image of the world, but you're thrown into the middle of this world and just have to pick up the thousands of pieces as you go.
Despite all that, this is one of the best books i've ever read. The climax/ending is spectacular. It means something more than just a story. But the sequels, well, this seems to be the peak of the books from what i've read. Still worth every minute of it to read this.

It's kind of terrible
Revisado: 10-23-20
The first thing that happens when you start the audiobook is a bunch of 5 year olds shout "Audible Kids!". Oh no, what have i done?
The first thing wrong is the female voice actor. She is actually really great, but she sounds like she is 11 or 12 years old. and the male voice actor sounds like he's 30 years old. This is a romance book. Do you see the problem? They both do their jobs really well, but every time i started up the book again, or every time the story switched back to the females perspective it was jarring.
It is uncomfortable on multiple levels. one i dont want to hear a preteen talk about her sexual fantasies. Two, why would 11 year olds be reading this story?
As the story starts, her voice made it hard to understand the age of the character. Her and her friends sound like elementary school students (voice actor, and writing style), but they are looking into S A T prep books.
The next problem is the romance. There is no build up at all. The 2 people meet and a couple hours later they kiss and are now together. I am not exaggerating. There is no quirky testing of the waters, long time building up to the first kiss. It all just happens and the author moves on like their relationship isn't important.
He starts driving her car after the first day they meet/start dating/ have their first kiss. All of this in the space of 5 hours of story time.
Everyone besides the main 2 characters, are stick figures. even the main 2 have no particular personality to them. Yeah they struggle with things, but what makes them different from any of human being? Nothing. They don't have any character to show us a difference.
And the last problem I'll mention is the structure and writing. Time makes no sense. The author skips over important details and character relationship development. We have no clue how much time has passed until the author mentions it. Is this the same day? the next day? one week later? Who knows, it's not important. Until it's mentioned, haa we first met 3 weeks ago now. what the hell? what happened in those 3 weeks? this is garbage.
Now for some spoiler stuff (i made it 3 hours into the book and stopped reading, i couldn't take it anymore). Cold weather makes them change into werewolves. below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Move to florida, you jackasses.

Historia
We are in a small room with the vampire, face to face, as he speaks--as he pours out the hypnotic, shocking, moving, and erotically charged confessions of his first two hundred years as one of the living dead. . . He speaks quietly, plainly, even gently . . . carrying us back to the night when he departed human existence as heir--young, romantic, cultivated--to a great Louisiana plantation, and was inducted by the radiant and sinister Lestat into the other, the "endless," life....

no vegan vampires? idiot
Revisado: 10-03-20
One of the first comments i read said "this isnt twilight with its vegan and sparkling vampires."
Obviously he's never read twilight, or he would realize that the main vampire in this book is a vegan vampire: he only drinks animals blood. and people talk about his astonishing skin, another similarity to twilight.
Atleast twilight is interesting and entertaining. this book is written like a 12th grade student trying to get extra points towards college. I am 3 hours in and I'm bored as hell.
The movie is amazing. It's what drove me to read this. hoping it would share that exuberant stamina. Maybe if this is the first vampire book you've ever read it will be entertaining.
There's no detail to the story. all the things i imagine come from the movie, which i haven't seen in a decade. The first 30 minutes were nice. when the world was novel and engaging to learn more. But it just drags on.
She skips details of the world and personality of it's characters beyond the most surface level things. i don't know what anyone looks like except the color of their hair. i don't know what's in a room or outside unless a character interacts with it. "character x talks to character y. she puts her hand on chair." oh theres a chair? are they in a bedroom? on the porch? in a living room? i don't know.
i'm sorry if you like this book already but it is boring as shit to me. maybe it's too old, and i can't enjoy the stilted writing of the time.
if anything, watch the movie with brad pitt and tom cruise. that is excellent.

Historia
When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

This book made me emotional,
Revisado: 10-01-20
like the first time i read twilight years ago. The author has a way with explaining emotions.
What crazy business it must have been to line up this character's story with the twilight book. It's done perfectly.
I only wish it would continue, or that she would write a sequel to the series, so i could see how the characters are getting along now. what their life is like after all that's happened.
The voice actor is great. it's easy to lose myself in the story. No difficulty discerning characters.

great
Revisado: 11-11-19
i love twilight and the host. its a testament to stephenie meyer that i read a fiction book that was not scifi or fantasy. the story was good. i dont know why but i feel a bit disappointed... like i said i love scifi and fantasy, i think thats what was missing for me. the main characters knowledge of chemistry sort of filled that role but it was only a big part of the first half of the story.
i wish it got more fantastical. the romance is good, the action is good, the characters are good, just needed some extra depth and fantastical ideas in the world building to tie it all together for me. decent read.
(addition) i thought it through some more. the conflict and antagonist are not very strong. thats whats not quite there. like in a mystery novel you want the main character to find lots of clues and use deductive reasoning to put things together,, its like there were only a few clues and we as the readers didnt fully grasp the context of the information, and the detective didnt do much deductive reasoning even tho thats what theyre great at.
we dont grasp the context of where her conflict comes from, and she doesnt use chemistry to solve complex problems. she does use it to solve some problems but its simple things.

Revisado: 11-06-19
no spoilers. just wonderful. i am a big fan of the twilight saga. i red this book back in highscool after finishing twilight, and now ive just finished listening to it. the voice performance is amazing. the story is great. good romance and great character work. they feel alive. the science fiction world building is well thought out, maybe 1 or 2 small plot holes. nothing that would break emersion. i wish she would write a second. maybe something small like The Short Second Life novella. maybe a different character in another part of the world, or something to just resolve a not fully answered question. if you liked twilight give this a go. now, to move on and read The Chemist for the first time lol. Cheers
