Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat.

outstanding story of WW2 events in Milan Italy
Revisado: 07-25-17
This story is set in WW2 Italy where the main character Pino becomes the driver for the German general Hanz Liase. We witness some of the terrible events during the war in Italy, atrocities committed by the Nazies and the terrible retribution when the Germans retreat from Milan. This is an out standing story recounting events not previously told. It is a story of courage, passion, love, fear, and determination. Narration is perfect.

Witty and Entertaining
Revisado: 12-23-16
A very witty and entertaining account of the adventures of Max Carrados who always extracts himself from impossible situations using superior deduction. As expected, Stephen Fry's narration is excellent, with many different characters beautifully portrayed.

Historia
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Historia
The Loch Ness monster: a creature that should have died out with the dinosaurs or a legend built on hoaxes and wishful thinking? Sir Peter Scott, internationally renowned naturalist and president of the World Wildlife Fund, was convinced that the monster existed. So were senior scientists at London's Natural History Museum and Chicago University; they lost their jobs because they refused to renounce their belief in the creature.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Excellent account of extraordinary endurance.
Revisado: 03-21-16
An excellent account of Shackleton's voyage wonderfully narrated. This book manages to create edge of your seat suspense even though we know the ending (if you have seen documentaries of Shackleton or read other history books). How Shackleton and his crew survive their terrible ordeals is remarkable. At times, their immediate survival depends on sheer luck, for example, the sudden appearance of a large leopard seal breaking through the ice which is then shot and provides the group with desperately needed food and cooking fuel. The twists and turns are like a suspense thriller. The story is well researched with frequent reference to the individual diaries of the team. A remarkable story.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Parts of this story reminded me of the movie "inglorious bastards" where in some scenes the tension would gradually build and build to become almost unbearable. The story from the viewpoint of the little blind girl describes her world in sounds and smells that was wonderful to imagine. A great story.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

What a great story!. I found myself looking for any excuse to plug in my ear buds and to hear how the poor guy left stranded on MARS was going to stay alive. When all seemed well, some new disaster would befall him. You'll have to see for yourself if he makes it. The story has intriguing technical detail and is told with wonderful humour.

Historia
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time.

Chilling Story of Mass Contagion
Revisado: 02-09-14
The srory consists of a series of interviews with key characters who survived the World War Z. The characters are from all countries and different phases of the war. The 'interviews' are frighteningly believable and take us on a journey of mass destruction and breakdown of society. An excellent story.
