Narrator destroys Story
Revisado: 11-18-24
Story was alright but would have been so much better if it wasn’t abridged. Listening to the narration was like listening to someone read a shopping list. It was horrid and painful to listen to.

Great until the Ending
Revisado: 10-31-23
Love the story until the last part when it lost me. Unhappy endings are something I don’t enjoy. Moreover this ending felt more like the author grew bored with this series and just wanted it over. Love the narrator even with what my American ears feel are mispronounced words. Author is one of my favorites but definitely not the ending of this story.

A Captivating Story Told by is Author
Revisado: 10-03-23
I bought this on a whim and am surprised how much I loved it. This book was captivating and well written. The concept of ghost marriages and the realms of the dead on its face may make one think of scary tales, but it is not so in this book. Rather a young girls naivety, love and family fill these pages brilliantly. I am so glad I found this gem of a book as it left me with a smile on my face and a warm feeling that one has when they finish a well written (or narrated) book.
The narrator, who is the author, made her story and its characters come alive. Her voice is melodic. The tale was not so much narrated as much as being told to you by someone intimately involved with it.

Historia
New York City native Jeremiah Salinger is one half of a hot-shot documentary-making team. He and his partner, Mike, made a reality show about roadies that skyrocketed them to fame. But now Salinger's left that all behind, to move with his wife, Annelise, and young daughter, Clara, to the remote part of Italy where Annelise grew up - the Alto Adige. Nestled in the Dolomites, this breathtaking, rural region that was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire remains more Austro than Italian.

Loved the Story and the Narration
Revisado: 09-28-23
The story may start out slowly, but builds to an ending that isn't one that I would have guessed. Having spent time in the Alto Adige, the location of this book was one of the reasons I purchased it. It is an area where Germanic and Italian languages and cultures come together and also clash. It was a perfect setting for the protagonist, who is emotionally struggling, to find an inner resolution while solving a mystery that has longed plagued the area.
The narrator was also wonderful. His German and Italian pronunciations were great. He was easy to listen to as well as understand. I would certainly listen to his narration again.

Historia
Pompeii, present day: archaeologist Maria Monti is working at a new dig site. Like hundreds before her she is investigating the night that Vesuvius erupted, consuming the ancient city with choking ash, scalding steam, and rivers of lava. But she has just unearthed something that shouldn’t be there, something that makes her question everything she knows about the disappearances of that fateful event. Several hundred miles away Alex Hunter’s family is holidaying in southern Italy when Mount Etna begins to shake, and ash begins to blanket the countryside....

Great story. Performance left much to be desired.
Revisado: 11-29-21
Loved the story. Still very relevant to current events of the day. The narration felt like I was listening to an old time newscaster. His Staccato reading made this very difficult to listen to. I had to force myself to try to ignore his irritating delivery. Doc Ford books are wonderful and this is one that should be redone with a new narrator!!!

Historia
Marine biologist and former government agent Doc Ford is sure he's beyond the point of being surprised by his longtime pal Tomlinson's madcap tales of his misspent youth. But he's stunned anew when avowed bachelor Tomlinson reveals that as a younger man strapped for cash, he'd unwittingly fathered multiple children via for-profit sperm bank donations. Thanks to genealogy websites, Tomlinson's now-grown offspring have tracked him down, seeking answers about their roots...but Doc quickly grows suspicious that one of them might be planning something far more nefarious.

Another Great Doc Ford Read
Revisado: 02-19-20
I usually wait to read Doc Ford books until I am on a beach on Captiva, but given that it has been a long wait for this book, I caved in and listened to it right away. After so many years and books I still love Doc, his friends and crazy situations. But I also love the Floridian history and education. Having been on the islands during and after the horrid red tide it is nice to realize that nature will rebound. The ending caught me by surprise and I can’t wait for the next Doc Ford or Hannah Smith novel.
