Historia
The memoirs of Civil War generals are some of our most common sources that we look at when learning about this tumultuous conflict. But what about the voices of the common soldier? Frank Wilkeson aimed to rectify this and reassert the importance of looking at the accounts of the men who carried the muskets, served the guns, and rode into the heat of battle. Recollections of a Private Soldier in the Army of the Potomac is a wonderfully refreshing account of the American Civil War that takes listeners to the heart of what it would have been like to have served in the front ranks.

Revisado: 01-23-23
A fascinating, unvarnished look at the Civil War through the eyes of the common soldier rather than the generals and politicians we usually read from. Certainly not the way I learned it in high school! Excellent read!

great narration, but the story bored me to tears. I must be horribly uncultured but if this is a literary masterpiece I couldn't see it. unendingly tedious.

incredible stories, held back by poor barration
Revisado: 02-19-21
I've listened to Tilt talk in a half dozen Jocko podcasts and been amazed at the stories, which are crazier than fiction. I bought the book to learn more in depth. While the narratives are incredibly compelling, his voice and style and flow are driving me nuts. It feels as if he's reading the prose for the first time.

Historia
The daughter of a Legion war hero, fighting was in Andien Broxin's blood. But the battles Republic marines face on strange and alien worlds are a far cry from the vaunted, brutal, no-holds-barred conflicts fought at the edge of the galaxy by the elite legionnaires. Until a devastating war erupts right in the Republic’s stellar backyard. Newly stationed on a mid-core planet being harassed by terrorist revolutionaries, Andien and her fellow “hullbusters” find themselves right in the middle of a desperate fight for survival.

Corpsman mispronounced will drive Vets nuts
Revisado: 07-30-20
good story of the family business and fairly well written. The narrator just couldn't sell it. the words didn't carry the weight correctly. And as an Infantryman, the mispronunciation of "corpsman" drove me bananas. Small, I know. But it makes the story feel less genuine. Great ending.

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

great for an 80s kid!
Revisado: 09-07-18
excellent narration and engrossing storyline...if it matches your timeline. Tons of electronics nostalgia for me. I recognized and played with a lot of the systems it talks about because I was only behind the "Halliday" character by a few years. Bet the book isn't nearly as cool for 20-somethings who never programmed a Commodore 64 or had an Atari 1200, Colecovision, Intellivision, or ever pumped a million quarters into Galaga or Joust or Tempest or Robitron. I did, and I loved all the 80s trivia!

Historia
Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Fantastic imagery...but what was the point?
Revisado: 05-03-17
McCarthy's prose is an endless and breathtaking cascade of stunning brutality that would probably defy description in the hands of a lesser author. However, I didn't find the story compelling at all when contrasted with The Road, so it got tedious quickly and my mind wandered. I never connected well enough with any of the characters to care much about what would happen to them, so the plot (what was it really?) just faded into the background, barely stringing together events. The Road is one of the best audible books I've ever listened to. Go there first.

Great voice acting, but the story seemed slow and plodding and full of holes compared to the original. Without the first book to prop it up, this would have been even less Interesting. It marks the end of my Dune journey.

A heart-rending yet proud account of the madness
Revisado: 10-06-15
Like nothing I've ever read, it covers the emotional toll and all of the deprivations, inhumanity, and general nastiness of my profession while remaining proud of the accomplishments of the Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations. No "dulce et decorum est" account, this is enough to make anyone question the madness and waste that is war. I appreciated the personal window into Sledge's internal conflict and terror as he underwent his baptism by fire, and as he fought through and observed the campaigns on Pelelieu and Okinawa.
