Historia
In February 1944, in one of the most astonishing battles of World War II, a ragtag collection of British clerks, drivers, doctors, muleteers, and other base troops, stiffened by a few dogged Yorkshiremen and a handful of tank crews, managed to defeat a much larger and sophisticated contingent of some of the finest infantry in the Japanese army on their march toward India.

Historia
More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

Just watch documentary on PBS
Revisado: 07-20-23
The book was great but it was all covered in the documentary on PBS. Read max Hastings book on Vietnam instead. My favorite Vietnam war book is Neil Sheehan’s A Bright Shining Lie. It’s about John Paul Van and is an amazing story about a great man in a complicated situation. This book is good but just pay $5 and get the PBS passport subscription and watch it there. There’s nothing new if you have seen the documentary.

Historia
To the Soviet Union, the sacrifices that enabled the country to defeat Nazi Germany in World War II were sacrosanct. The foundation of the Soviets’ hard-won victory was laid during the battle for the city of Stalingrad, resting on the banks of the Volga River. To Russians, it is a pivotal landmark of their nation’s losses, with more than two million civilians and combatants either killed, wounded, or captured during the bitter fighting from September 1942 to February 1943. Both sides endured terrible conditions in brutal, relentless house-to-house fighting.

Great overall book
Revisado: 01-21-23
The book was really good but it was honestly more of a recap of Stalingrad. There was a lot of useful information that I learned from this story and it gives a good background of the history of the brutal battle. I would recommend it to anyone wanting additional information, but only about 30% of the book deals with pavlovs house.

In The Cactus Air Force, Pacific War expert Thomas McKelvey Cleaver worked closely with Eric to build on his collection of diary entries, interviews and first-hand accounts to create a vivid narrative of the struggle in the air over the island of Guadalcanal between August 20 and November 15, 1942.

The first book dedicated to the cactus air force on audible
Revisado: 09-10-22
The book was really good. It covered all aspects of the Guadalcanal campaign. It goes a little more in depth in regards to the pilots and the air crew. I loved it but my only complaint is that the day in and day out air battles got a little monotonous (obviously not for the brave men who fought there). The Guadalcanal campaign is my favorite world war 2 campaign. I would recommend hornfischer’s book, Neptune’s inferno. That is the best book on this subject but this is a good one in addition to it. It is a good length as well, you get your moneys worth.

Historia
The fourth and final year of the Civil War offers one of that era’s most compelling narratives, defining the nation and one of history’s great turning points. Now, S.C. Gwynne’s Hymns of the Republic addresses the time Ulysses S. Grant arrives to take command of all Union armies in March 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox a year later. He breathes new life into the epic battle between Lee and Grant; the advent of 180,000 black soldiers in the Union army; Sherman’s March to the Sea; the rise of Clara Barton; and much more.

Revisado: 09-07-22
Great book but he was a little hard on ole Bobby lee. At Appomattox he criticized lee for not surrendering earlier but honestly it must have been so hard to give in after years of fighting. The book was really good though. It covered all aspects of the war and war effort in the north and the south.

The Early Morning of War: Bull Run, 1861 (Campaigns and Commanders Series)

Historia
When Union and Confederate forces squared off along Bull Run on July 21, 1861, the Federals expected this first major military campaign would bring an early end to the Civil War. But when Confederate troops launched a strong counterattack, both sides realized the war would be longer and costlier than anticipated. First Bull Run, or First Manassas, set the stage for four years of bloody conflict that forever changed the political, social, and economic fabric of the nation. It also introduced the commanders, tactics, and weaponry that would define the American way of war through the turn of the twentieth century.

It was a great telling of this early battle. It captures all elements of the campaign for the north and the south. Now we need a second Bull Run book to come out on audible! Narration was great. Couldn’t have been any better.

Historia
The defeat of South Vietnam was arguably America's worst foreign policy disaster of the twentieth century. Yet a complete understanding of the endgame—from the January 27, 1973 signing of the Paris Peace Accords to South Vietnam's surrender on April 30, 1975—has eluded us. Black April addresses that deficit.

Best book on the fall of South Vietnam
Revisado: 07-11-22
I have been waiting for a book about this topic. It is a great in depth analysis on why the communists won the war. It’s hard to believe this actually happened. It is probably only 4.5 stars but I want to make sure this book is listened to by as many people as possible.
Narrator was good but some Vietnamese words were probably off but that’s to be expected.

Historia
It was 1778, and the recent American victory at Saratoga had netted the US a powerful ally in France. Many, including General George Washington, presumed France’s entrance into the war meant independence was just around the corner. Meanwhile, having lost an entire army at Saratoga, Great Britain pivoted to a 'southern strategy'. The army would henceforth seek to regain its southern colonies, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, a highly profitable segment of its prewar American empire.

Narrator was perfectly fine
Revisado: 04-14-22
I read some comments about the narrator being horrible but he did a 4+ star job. No Grover Gardner but it was totally listenable. Great content. We learn about Saratoga then Yorktown but there was years in between them that doesn’t get talked about. Battle of cowpens was my favorite. I’d recommend to anyone who likes military history.

This book was so good. The story was told in a way to keep me on the edge of my seat. Good technical information, good personal information. What a great story. I didn’t realize how famous Doolittle already was.

Historia
Though he barely escaped expulsion from West Point, John Bell Hood quickly rose through the ranks of the Confederate army. With bold leadership in the battles of Gaines' Mill and Antietam, Hood won favor with Confederate president Jefferson Davis. But his fortunes in war took a tragic turn when he assumed command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. After the fall of Atlanta, Hood marched his troops north in an attempt to draw Union army general William T. Sherman from his devastating "March to the Sea." But the ploy proved ruinous for the South.
