Too much ranting, too little science
Revisado: 07-27-24
I was looking for a book to better understand the sources of carbon emissions and solutions available. While one can learn some of those things from this book, it is largely a rant about the politics and media difficulty surrounding climate change.

Historia
China's economy has been booming for decades now. A formidable and emerging power on the world stage, the China that most Americans picture is only a rough sketch, based on American news coverage, policy, and ways of understanding. Enter Keyu Jin: a world-renowned economist and a professor at the London School of Economics. A person fluent in both Eastern and Western cultures, and a voice of the new generation of Chinese who represent a radical break from the past, Jin is uniquely poised to explain how China became the most successful economic story of our time.

Shen Yun meets economics
Revisado: 05-27-24
Well, I am more than happy to have my beliefs and values challenged, it became increasingly clear this book disregards the repression of the Chinese people, imposition of it’s will over neighboring countries, and disregard for the environment, and instead chooses to celebrate economic growth.

Historia
This “incredibly captivating” (Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Emperor of All Maladies) portrait of schizophrenia, the most malignant and mysterious mental illness, by renowned psychiatrist Jeffrey Lieberman, interweaves cultural and scientific history with dramatic patient profiles and clinical experiences to impart a revolutionary message of hope. For the first time in history, we can effectively treat schizophrenia, limiting its disabling effects—and we’re on the verge of being able to prevent the disease’s onset entirely.

The new default book for understanding psychosis
Revisado: 08-30-23
Extraordinary book - engaging and accessible but deeply insightful even for someone who’s read extensively on the topic. Unlike many medical books, there’s no schtick here, rather every key point references research and credits others rather than self. Hugely helpful for deepening my understanding of psychosis and what and where to access additional services.

Historia
New hope for those suffering from conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, addictions, PTSD, ADHD, and more. Though incidence of these conditions is skyrocketing, for the past four decades standard treatment hasn’t much changed, and success rates in treating them have barely improved, either. Meanwhile, the stigma of the “mental illness” label - damaging and devastating on its own - can often prevent sufferers from getting the help they need. Brain specialist and best-selling author Dr. Daniel Amen aims to change all that.

Historia
We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

Compelling concept
Revisado: 07-03-23
I gave Dr. Palmer a lot of credit for putting forward a novel theory on mental health that brings together different disciplines in a holistic manner. His reading of his own book was personal and much appreciated. I do wish the book ended with more prescriptive recommendations, but I suppose the theory is still too new to offer actionable steps.
