Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

I like shorter stories. Just the story without too much filler and just forget most of the sex angles bulls**t unless it has a purpose to the real story.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Appears to Serve an Agenda
Revisado: 12-01-24
The overall concept as a continuation of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn was a good idea, but was overtold and written to serve the authors agenda. James is a self-taught Frederick Douglas in the making. He somhow becomes well read from only one or two books, and can correctly and secretly use whom, Voltaire, know math, etc, but had never seen a map. He masters reading a map in two minutes and strikes out north maybe to Illinois while knowing something else must be SW. The narrator may be good, but not for this book. His delivery is stilted and his Southern Whites sounds more like a Black plantation man, and James, who had listened to his white master (who sounds like a Black slave) and managed to convert it more like a Frederick Douglas. How does this happen? The entire read is full of innuendo. Huckleberry Finn was about a lower-class white boy scoundrel who was conflicted about Jim's plight as a runaway slave and did he want to go his own way. Twain decides that Huck abandons Jim which is most likely how it would have gone. Twain's was less about race, and more about youth misbehavior and truancy with an absent white-trash father. Huck was characteristic of poor wayward rascally youths just before the Civil War. However, this book concludes that Jim was Huck's real father as he tries to rewrite Twain's story of those times and make it fit this authors agenda. Twain never said or implied that Finn was not Hu k's resl father. This author seems to be promoting the general direction currently running in today's revisionist Black historians and story tellers. That is my take on a not well done book, but a fictional story may not be history, but it takes on an unofficial and false historical reference over time. History is a general record of a time and flavored to fit an authors biases and agendas.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

OK but didn't work for me
Revisado: 07-05-24
The concept and story are pretty interesting, but my problem was that I couldn't get with the narration style. Sort of like listening to Johnny Galecki on tranquilizers. Of course, the Murderbot is a bot, and maybe that is to be expected.

Detailed Story
Revisado: 01-14-23
I enjoy Reacher books and this was no exception except it was a little too much detail. Narrator Brick does a great job plowing through. Reacher is a tough dude as a matter-of-fact know-it-all. Not a Smart-Alec but he sees and knows so much that he can assess a situation before a mortal can begin to think about it. He leads an eventful life even as he takes out the trash or pays for his cheap motel room. An enjoyable heavy dose of murder and mayhem with an occasional twist of humor.

A high school senior play starring all the teacher`s pets like Meathead and Gloria. Why 2 stars? Because that is a lot more than I could bear to endure but I know it required a lot of prep time to put together. How did I even download this? I hope it was an audible free-bee.

Too long
Revisado: 02-27-22
I am not a good listener, but the book just went on and on with the same storyline. Grisham seems to have gone away from his bread and butter lawyer and crime cases. A noble calling to get non-guilty out of prison and wonderful they can right horrible wrong that these people suffer, but it was tiresome. Beck was good as usual.

Historia
A Lincoln Navigator carries three well-dressed people through the barren New Jersey salt flats. The trip is uncomfortable but necessary. Their target has no phone, certainly no email, and never answers his mail. But August Jorgenson is no country bumpkin. Before retiring, he was one of the most famous judges in the country, and only opinions like his fierce opposition to the death penalty kept him from a seat on the Supreme Court.

I have to agree with many who have been critical of the narration. That was my opinion before I came online and saw others who agreed with me. I have little idea if the story is any good or maybe Grisham put out a hum-drum book, but I am having real trouble completing it. I have read several of Grisham's novels and listened to a few over the years and really enjoyed them. And I kinda like MLP's acting including playing Ricky's mother in Grisham's The Client movie. She naturally talks South Carolina Southern slow, which is part of her charm, but I had to put it on 1.25 speed to listen and stlll could not distinguish between characters or whether man or woman. I'll just read Grisham and watch Parker.
