So bad I can’t believe I finished it
Revisado: 02-23-25
Worst book I’ve read in a long time. The dialogue is soap opera quality and every situation is completely unbelievable. Police immediately accept him and cooperate with no question. Mobsters and a murderer confess to him like Bond villans. And of course his wife is a former pole dancer and taekwondo champion. If this wasn’t enough then we next team up with his friends and family along with a cop and FBI agent to commit an act of domestic terrorism by bombing a building full of criminals as well as innocent bystanders.
0 out of 5 stars, I do not recommend to anyone.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

This was not as clever or funny as it tried to be. Only read this if it’s free and even then you should have low expectations.

What kind of person does it take to build a civilization from the ground up? In this fun hard science fiction novel, astronaut Nick Burke will have to learn how to be a leader if he wants humanity to survive on a new planet, even if he is no longer a human himself. Nick Burke dreams of successfully creating the first sustainable space colony in human history.

Doesn’t live up to its potential
Revisado: 11-09-23
It began with a pretty interesting premise and I was drawn in. About half way through it turned into Minecraft Steve building village from scratch. I should have probably bailed at this point but I was interested to see how it played out so I powered on. The last quarter of the book had a fairly interesting twist but then quickly turned into a Scholastic middle school instructional manual about building a new society.
It started as a classic sci-fi planet colonization story and slowly evolved into a boring children’s book. I’m certainly confused about who is the intended audience.

Look past the atrocious cover art
Revisado: 06-12-23
There is actually a pretty original story here. It’s a difficult book to describe without spoilers and it’s probably best to read without knowing much about it. It’s not for everyone especially if you’re sensitive to violence, foul language and misogyny.

Why is this rubbish book so highly recommended?
Revisado: 04-16-23
Nothing against the qualities of the writing, the author can put down some quality prose, but that’s the only positive thing I can say about it. The story itself is just neck beard basement dweller fantasy fulfillment. Ridiculous bragging yarns told by the M.C. himself. And while he obviously thinks very highly of his own skills and intellect he constantly makes the stupidest decisions. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste a credit on this like I did.

Revisado: 04-13-23
I really enjoyed The Priory of the Orange Tree but this book was not as good.
Way too much filler made it unnecessarily long & I love long books. It’s definitely worth reading, but don’t have super high expectations.

Two stars from me on this type of book is not a bad review. This is exactly what I expected it to be so I'm not disappointed.
If you're looking for a thought provoking story and beautiful literary prose......well I'd say look elsewhere.

Fun fast read, plenty of deadpan humor and quirkiness plus some pretty on the nose political and social commentary. So just what I expected from Max Barry.

Historia
One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

Best I’ve found for falling asleep
Revisado: 01-12-23
I may save this audiobook forever to use as a sleep aid.
This isn’t really a book anyway, just a bunch of internal thoughts and philosophizing by Marcus Aurelius that was never intended to be published.
Duncan Steen drones on in a monotonous monotone as I drift away with my earphones in. It’s glorious and better than any white noise I’ve ever tried.
