A delightful audio memoir!
Revisado: 11-28-23
Jeff Daniels is a great storyteller. Not a chronological memoir, this is 12 episodes of stories, comedy bits and songs. I didn't know he wrote songs, sang and played guitar. The songs are laugh-out-loud funny as are many of the stories from his interesting life. Please do another audio memoir, I can't wait!

Historia
Anne Elliot, daughter of the snobbish Sir Walter Elliot, is woman of quiet charm and deep feelings. Eight years before our story begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret.

Excellent Adaptation
Revisado: 10-06-22
I have not read the complete novel but enjoyed this full cast adaptation. Unlike some other reviewers, I enjoyed the music at the beginning of each segment. I was listening with a speaker and not with earphones, so the increase in volume did not bother me. The narrators were all very good, but the low volume with some of the speakers made it difficult to understand what they were saying especially if I wasn't right next to the portable speaker. This audiobook made me interested in reading the novel. My favorite part was the beautiful letter that Captain Wentworth wrote to Ann. Whether you've read the novel or not, I think you would enjoy this adaptation.

Why have viewers always had a love affair with romance movies? From tragic love stories, like Romeo + Juliet, to feel-good rom-coms, like Sleepless in Seattle, people simply cannot get enough of these movies. Join Professor Eric R. Williams to analyze dozens of titles that fall under the scope of "romance films"—inviting students to see old favorites in a new light and introduce them to elements of romance in movies one might not consider to be part of the genre.

What Makes a Romance Movie?
Revisado: 08-14-22
This is a series of short lectures that attempts to define the romance movie genre. Williams delves into the genre of different movies and classifies the "super genres", "macro genres", and "pathways" etc. This would be a good introduction for a beginning screenwriter. He analyses a number of movies that helps define these categories. Although he gets sidetracked at times, the listener comes away with a better feeling of what makes a romance movie as compared to other genres. The expertise and enthusiasm that Williams has for the movies is evident and infuses the lectures, making them more interesting.

War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

An Epic Novel
Revisado: 08-12-22
I had read this novel 55 years ago in college. I decided to revisit it by listening to the audiobook. Since I listened only an hour or so a day, it took me 5 months to get through the entire book. Tolstoy integrates the home scenes and battle scenes masterfully. His characterization is wonderful especially for Andrei, Natalya and Pierre. I could really feel for the characters - Tolstoy brought the Russian aristocracy to life, the parties, the home life of the early 19th century. He is just as masterful bringing the chaos and confusion of the battlefields - his analysis of Napoleon is interesting. I enjoyed some of his philosophical musings, but the 2nd Epilogue can be a slog. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful historical novel and well worth the time and effort to read.
Thandiwe Newton's narration is like listening to a play - she has a voice for every character; the listener really becomes engrossed in the story. Well done and a herculean effort!

Nikolai Gogol's The Inspector General, known also as The Government Inspector, was first published in 1836. It was based on an anecdote first recounted to Gogol by Pushkin. Laurence Olivier plays the irresponsible gambler Ivan Alexandrovic Khlestakov in this satire on the greed, corruption and stupidity of Imperial Russia.

Interesting version of the Gogol story
Revisado: 10-13-21
Short radio dramatization of the Gogol short story with Sir Laurence Olivier and others not named. This is a humorous, short listen that brings out the satire of the original story. The music interludes are jarring, but the actors are excellent.

Historia
Read by Juliet Stevenson and Simon Callow, A Literary Christmas is a seasonal anthology that collects together poems, short stories, and prose extracts by some of the greatest poets and writers in the English language. Like Charles Dickens’ ghosts of Christmas Past and Present, they are representative of times old and new - from John Donne’s Elizabethan hymn over the baby Jesus to Rudyard Kipling’s "Christmas in India", from Thomas Tusser counting the cost of a Tudor feast to Laurie Lee’s "Cider with Rosie".

Nice Collection of Christmas Stories
Revisado: 02-20-21
The stories were, for the most part, top-notch. Both narrators were very good, but the overall four stars is because there is no pause between stories. This is very distracting and takes away from the enjoyment of these stories. But otherwise, these are excellent listens anytime of the year. My favorite is the Saki story, Bertie's Christmas Eve, makes me laugh each time I hear it.

A Roman Doctor In Britain
Revisado: 06-07-17
Enjoyable start to this mystery series set in Roman-occupied Britain. But I didn't feel immersed in the place and time (not like I do, for instance, in the historical novels of David Liss). Perhaps the next novels in the series will give me more of the feeling of being in the time period. This novel was interesting and I got caught up in the mystery. Simon Vance is a great narrator and doesn't disappoint here - I don't think I would have liked the book as well if I was reading it instead.

Historia
The Thirteen Clocks is James Thurber's enduring story of life in a castle where time stands still on every clock at 10 minutes to five. The Duke of the castle ignores time and pays no attention to temperature either. He is a wicked Duke who has hands cold enough to choke a bull. The only warmth he understands is the warm hands of Princess Saralinda, his fair niece, whom he cherishes and protects from suitors.

Revisado: 06-07-17
One of Thurber's best stories; his wordplay and humor make this a winner. But it is made even better with Edward Woodard's fantastic narration. It took me awhile to get used to the sound effects and music and I'm still not sure if I would like it better without these. However, it's delightful anyway and if you have children they should enjoy it too.
