As the first humans allowed in Suevan space, there’s a lot riding on my all-woman team. Earth desperately needs their tech, and I’m determined to prove we can negotiate the price. Without their planetary defense systems, Earth is a sitting duck, ripe for invasion. Except the Suevan culture is nothing like ours. When I take part in what I think is a welcoming ceremony, I leave with more than I bargained for: a husband. A mate. Apparently, we’re there to marry them as payment—something the top brass on Earth doesn’t bother denying. Fantastic.

Lloyd is So Engaging as Draz

Honestly, I wish he’d have been the only narrator, Jackson took what should have been a badass FMC and literally had her whine about everything (not getting the D fast enough, wanting to be a warlord, not wanting to meet his mom, the guy seeing her pee, etc. I mean, seriously.) EXCEPT actually nearly dying from what was likely early sepsis, she was somehow stoic and mostly silent through a mind-numbingly painful infection. Jackson’s voice and accent is quite nasal and unfortunately it was a major detractor as I listened to the story.

Short, Sweet, Talented Narration

When’s she lonely ended up being my favorite of the two. Khex is something of a frat Boy Scout eventually redeemed; affable, funny as heck, rather noble, and in the end just straight up hot. Tassar is besotted with Leilani from day one and pries a bit of fun out of her after some patient coaxing. I quite enjoyed both these narrators as well; Lloyd is clearly a pro and just so engaging to listen to, and while Macie may not have the polish that Lloyd does, she has a voice that gives the FMCs a youthful, endearing quality that makes them easier to like.

I can live with being stuck on the far end of space. I can live with having to spend weeks on an abandoned station in an asteroid belt. Sure, I don't belong, but I've got my book and my eight-legged attack cat with me. I should be fine. I'm not fine. My alien host, Jerrok, is a jerk. He's surly and unpleasant. He hasn't bathed in years. He's part cyborg - and all those parts seem to be falling to pieces.

A bit drawn out

I like a slow burn as much as the next reader, but this was crazy long. Still, I enjoyed it and even laughed a few times as the barbs the guys threw at one another, of course the charmingly irritating Bethiah.

I am the only one excited—okay, delighted—at finding myself married to a hulking, alien warlord. I’ve always been into scales and tails, and this big green beefcake is right up my alley. Except, he’s not into me. But I want my fun, and that’s the very least I can get out of this arranged marriage. I’m determined to get my way, and I’m sick of being ignored.
