Historia
A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

sequel w/ severe pacing issues
Revisado: 12-01-23
absolutely loved the anthology nature of Hyperion, but Fall is a more straightforward plot that has been streched quite thin. feels like there was a mandate that Fall of H have a similar page count as Hyperion but there's only half as much story. a lot of repeating info from the first book, a lot of repeating info from chapter to chapter, so much so that I feel punished for paying attention. there are several big reveals to mysteries that I guessed at an entire book ago that this book slowly drips out; smart characters take forever to put the math together in a way that feels like padding (also, if you're going to reveal two different characters are actually the same person, you can't describe one of them with brown eyes and the other with green, c'mon Dan).
if i wasn't reading this for bookclub I would have stopped at act 2. this was an audiobook book I was begging to be finished by the epilogue (unlike Hyperion, which I restarted as soon as I finished the first time). huge disappointment, maybe I'll try the 3-4 books much much later when the stink of this wears off.

Historia
The timely story of how the forces of change converge on a small tribe of Niaruna Indians living in the heart of the Amazon rain forest. In addition to being a prophetic commentary on emerging threats to the environment, and the troublesome encroachment of the modern world on traditional cultures, the novel is a suspenseful adventure story about two men striving to find meaning in a world not their own.

really good story + performance, bad production
Revisado: 03-29-23
good story and I love George Guidall but very frustrating that the audio frequently dips to silence in-between sentences. needs some white noise to not be distracting and whoever the audio engineer for this should know that

narrator takes a second to get used to
Revisado: 08-29-22
I thought the narrator might not be the best choice because he has a kind of gruff military voice but after the first couple of stories I got used to it and he's definitely still a very good narrator

a dry-witted banger of Edwardian fiction
Revisado: 08-01-22
the narrator is nearly a parody of the hoity-toity squishy British accent but serves the dry humor of the story quite well. enjoyed the whole thing got through it very quickly. E.M. Forester is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Historia
The Washington Post's former Baghdad bureau chief, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, takes us into the Green Zone, headquarters for the American occupation in Iraq. In this bubble separated from wartime realities, the task of reconstructing Iraq is in the hands of 20-somethings chosen for their Republican Party loyalty. They pursue irrelevant neoconservative solutions and pie-in-the-sky policies instead of rebuilding looted buildings and restoring electricity, angering the locals and fueling the insurgency.

Historia
Earth has become a library planet over the last several thousand years, a bastion of both useful and useless knowledge - esoterica of all types: History, science, politics - gathered by teams of "pack rats" who scour the galaxy for any scrap of information. Knowledge is power, knowledge is wealth, and knowledge can be a weapon. As powerful dictators come and go over the course of history, the cadre of dedicated librarians is sworn to obey the lawful government - and use their wits to protect the treasure trove of knowledge they have collected over the millennia.

This is really two short stories in the same setting, the first story is the best writing I've read from Herbert and the second one is okay. Scott Brick is always good but he is especially well suited for these.
