The author would have us believe that the world's largest live music company would hire an A&R talent scout who is extremely naïve and knows literally nothing about the current music scene . Or that in the totally online world of the novel that music company's underhanded tactics – working with the cops to shut down illegal music scenes around the country– would remain a secret. Or that in that extremely online world the only way to find new musical talent would be to laboriously search out underground scenes in person. These are just a few examples of the implausibilities the plot is built around

A little bit of a slow beginning, especially during the transport section, but builds nicely. I look forward to seeing how the main character develops further.

I'm a Stephenson fan, but this book is so boring. The human race will end in two years, so we try to build a space arc. The entire book is consumed by descriptions of the technologies the humans invent and put in place. Meanwhile, Stephenson is completely uninterested in the havoc that would likely occur on the planet. In his mind, everything goes on as before, with people going to their jobs, able to rely on police, supply chains, etc. The characters are totally schematic. Just outlines. In one scene, the main character falls in love--but we have no idea why. We're just told that it happened; no dialog or scene with his love interest. They meet and we're informed of the outcome. A book only Elon Musk could love.

Everything you like about Slow Horses is here. Great plotting, the characters you love, lots of snappy lines. And an excellent audio performance.

Narrator's mushy enunciation took me a while to get used to

Zadie Smith does a lot of great accent work in her narration, but her enunciation in her normal speaking voice is mushy. Words like "murder" sound like "mother." I had to slow the narration down to understand her—which was definitely a first for me. I eventually got used to it…

The reader is the worst. She puts no emotion whatsoever into her performance. She doesn't use voices to differentiate characters and her delivery is very predictable, always following the same rising and falling pattern. I literally had to check to make sure the voice wasn't computer generated (I recommend listening at x1.25 speed, which adds a little pep). The novel is good, albeit sometimes repetitive. But it's well written, with engaging characters and a lot of interesting detail about the gaming industry. The portrayal of a friendship felt original.

Not up to this authors usual standard. Lots of plot holes. And an alien species whose powers are undefined, which lets them solve unsolvable problems in a deus ex machina style.

Some interesting ideas. But storytelling is baggy. Too many important scenes are told rather than enacted. The ending to this book is completely unsatisfying and occurs randomly, just a waystation to the next volume.

And exciting story, engaging characters, complex and interesting world, expert action scenes and a performance filled with personality. Recommend!

I read the first installment of this series and liked it well enough to try the second. But this book is incoherent and goes nowhere. In particular, it does not work as an audiobook, given the many many strange names and the long back stories and flashbacks and histories of various realms that are jammed in to the muddled and pointless plot.
