Historia
On a cold day in March of 1911, officials marched twelve Black men into the heart of a forest in Maryland. Under the supervision of a doctor, the men were forced to clear the land, pour cement, lay bricks, and harvest tobacco. When construction finished, they became the first twelve patients of the state’s Hospital for the Negro Insane. For centuries, Black patients have been absent from our history books. Madness transports listeners behind the brick walls of a Jim Crow asylum. In Madness, journalist Antonia Hylton tells the 93-year-old history of Crownsville Hospital.

A Very Important History
Revisado: 04-20-25
This beautifully researched and written book is a very important history of a forgotten part of our country’s past. Ms Hylton has done a great service to her readers, in laying bare the truths about the Crownsville Asylum in Annapolis, Maryland and showing us this part of Southern and American history.

Historia
No bond is more sacred than the one between a mother and child. And no figure is more sympathetic than a mother whose child faces a life-threatening illness. But what if the mother is the reason for the illness? What if the sympathy is the point? With help from some of the top MBP experts in the world, Dunlop and Weber uncover the complex maze of psychological, systemic, and cultural issues that compound MBP and offer solutions for how we might find our way out.

Historia
For years, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles.

I especially liked the narrator. He does voices and accents quite well. It’s a good story too and believable even though it’s a work of fiction.

At First I Hated This Book
Revisado: 11-26-24
For the first couple of hours I thought I can’t keep listening to this book. The author reading it annoyed me until gradually I became sucked in to the poetry of every sentence and hearing this person express the memories of his life in a way that made me want to hear more. His jumping back and forth within the years began to make sense and I could actually feel the fear and grit and elation of his growing up and then having his own children and being with different women and the experience of alcoholism and acting and ending the story with the person who affected him most - his mother.

Historia
As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

Love Michael McDonald
Revisado: 08-10-24
I absolutely love this book. I had a career as a classical musician and wasn’t into rock and popular music the way most people are but I always loved listening to Michael and the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Coming from a classical and jazz background I’m especially attuned to beautiful harmonies and chords and Michael’s music has always grabbed me. On a second level, I had a cousin who lived in the Midwest who had the same kind of Irish humor and Michael sounds remarkably like he did. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this and also bought the hard copy. I’ll be reading it and listening to it again. The end conversation is great with Paul Reiser. They make a good duo.

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

I liked the narration especially and I liked the volume of information in the book. Not too long ago I found an ancestor of mine who took part in the Norman invasion and the battle of 1066, so that part was particularly interesting to me. I enjoyed the narrator’s wry humor and making the history alive for me.

Historia
Drawing on period letters and chronicles, and on the papers of the Virginia Company - which financed the settlement of Jamestown - David Price tells a tale of cowardice and courage, stupidity and brilliance, tragedy and costly triumph. He takes us into the day-to-day existence of the English men and women whose charge was to find gold and a route to the Orient, and who found, instead, hardship and wretched misery. Death, in fact, became the settlers' most faithful companion, and their infighting was ceaseless.

I am a descendant of Thomas Savage (mentioned several times in the book).
Revisado: 07-30-23
I have read several accounts of the Jamestown early history and found this one to be the most complete and interesting. The narrator is great - using a British accent when quoting the characters and speaking in a humorous if slightly sarcastic manner when quoting the men who considered themselves “gentlemen” and thereby refusing to work, as they were used to having servants do the dirty jobs necessary to keep everyone alive. I was particularly interested in the author’s depiction of John Smith, of Pocahontas and of King James the First (or Sixth).
Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
