Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

disgustingly sexual
Revisado: 11-29-24
at the end of the day, this is an elaborate fanfiction based on a popular children's book series. yet the author has gained include extremely problematic elements such as transphobia and a very broad array of sexual language and situations. I stopped listening and uninstalled once the young group of secondary characters entered a sex Den and began a scene of bestiality. there needs to be very strong content warnings on this audiobook. this is in no way family-friendly

God, but over-produced
Revisado: 07-13-23
The narrator is brilliantly talented, and manages to imitate Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn almost perfectly. But this audiobook is so over-produced that the added effects are distractimg
Music in weird places, dialog over comms made much more quietly, and sound effects during battled and such.
Reading is supposed to give you a chance to use your imagination, and the production company tries to take that away from you

Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Such a disappointment!
Revisado: 09-20-22
First of all, this does not show up in the reading order for Expeditionary Force, and is not mentioned at the beginning of Armageddon, so I spent most of that book confused as hell about what happened in Dayton.
Second, the performances in this audio drama are HORRIBLE. Everyone sounds like they're reading into a microphone in an empty auditorium from a script they've never seen before. RC Bray used clearly defined accents (i.e. Southern for Adams), but none of the performers have similar accents at all, making it that much harder to keep characters straight.
The kristang are difficult to understand in general, and nearly impossible to differentiate.
I'm ONLY finishing this story because I'm tired of the confusion in later books without it. PLEASE never do this again!

The book is ok
Revisado: 01-21-21
Wil Wheaton's performance was perfect, no complaints.
The book, however, was pretty mediocre. Cline spends a lot of time in the first half of the book repeating explanations of technology, acronyms, and character history as though the reader/listener can't retain said information from chapter to chapter. The repetitiveness becomes distracting and frustrating.
The plot was also fairly predictable. While trying to figure out what was going on, every character was clearly thinking about the problem in a very binary way, when the previous book went to great pains to show them as out-of-the-box thinkers.
Cline also spends a significant portion of the first half of the book building up a new character, then seems to forget about this character in the second half. The characters inclusion in the finale almost seems like an afterthought.
And finally, it is just incredibly convenient how every challenge they encounter in this new and unanticipated contest still miraculously falls in the expertise of exactly one member of the High Five.
This book just felt like a cash-grab. I have a sinking feeling that Cline intends to do another sequel or spin-off, and if he does I have no intention of reading it.

the ending felt very anti-climactic. It was almost as if the narrator forgot to read the last chapter. It also seemed odd that the villain had a ridiculous French accent while his daughter had none

Revisado: 07-11-19
there is a ton of unnecessary swearing in the book. That's the only real complaint I have against the author.
The narrator is a completely different story. His inflection makes absolutely no sense. it definitely sounds like he never read the story before starting his recording. this is a great tutorial on how not to narrate a book

The next thing Mattie and Brewster know, their parents are frozen like human statues in their living room, the guy in the bathrobe has vanished, and they need to find answers - fast.

It's ok
Revisado: 05-14-19
The writing is simplistic, and I'm not sure the author was completely familiar with some of the words he used. Even though the characters live in a post-technological world, there were references used that they couldn't have know about, such as galaxies and robots.
The narrator also made strange choices. The real-world location of the story is North America, but the narrator made all the characters sound English except for the dwarves, which sounded Scottish

When you discover the world is a computer program, and you figure out that by altering the code you can time travel and perform acts that seem like magic, what can possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything. Just ask Brit, who has jumped around in time with such abandon that she has to coexist with multiple versions of herself. Now, Brit the Elder finds that her memories don't match Brit the Younger's.

A big disappointment after the previous books
Revisado: 06-25-18
Luke Daniels continues to impress with his narration; I have no complaints there.
I've really enjoyed the series so far, but this book was a big let down for me. The character(s) of Brit was a cute and clever novelty in the previous novels, but she/they take center stage here and it's honestly very boring. The entire novel is basically 30 chapters repeating the same predestination/free will arguement with a very unsatisfying end. I'll give the next book a chance, but if it's anything like this I'll be done with the series.

The narrator did a great job, as always. The author, however, got distracted a few times and started explaining mundane things that had nothing to do with the story, long explanations that became very annoying
