Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Two for the Price of One
Revisado: 03-07-22
Mr. Horowitz got me with the TV series Foyle's War. This story just exposes his brilliance even more. The characters grab you, and the plot never fails to surprise. Halfway through the book it is revealed that there will be no ending, the main character, being an author, is murdered. Well there is, but it has the added juice of both solving the mystery of the authors death plus. The biblical references were wonderful.

Historia
Gibby's older brothers have already been to war. One died there. The other came back misunderstood and hard, a decorated killer now freshly released from a three-year stint in prison. Jason won't speak of the war or of his time behind bars, but he wants a relationship with the younger brother he hasn't known for years. Determined to make that connection, he coaxes Gibby into a day at the lake: long hours of sunshine and whisky and older women.

Remembering the 60's
Revisado: 09-26-21
First time reading this author, but it won't be the last. Mr. Hart develops characters, who are both heroic and flawed. While we all strive for the former, we can certainly relate to the latter. The fact that I am the parent of twins, and that I am a VietNam era veteran brought so many emotions to my eyes. I also appreciated the voice of the youngest brother who was able to capture some of the best qualities of his older brothers, and became increasingly wise and courageous throughout the novel.
The only drawback to the conclusion was that the mother was left off the hook in the end. She was clearly the least admirable of all the characters, and she did not have to pay a price. I guess told by a male, it's hard to put a mother's feet to the fire.
Finally, it is the first time I have listened to a Mr. Stillwell presentation, five stars for the intonation and character specific voices. Totally enjoyed his voice.

Excellent but a Little Predictable
Revisado: 07-15-21
It took a while to get to know the characters, but once I knew them, I loved them. I was caught up, but I shortly figured out the ultimate conclusion. There was an interesting spin on how it got there. I anxiously look forward to more from this author. As always Scott was exciting and preformed a wide variety of characters with convincing voices.

Historia
During the 20th century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Only Steinbeck can draw
Revisado: 07-05-19
Morality in Steinbeck's paintings are drawn with an amazing array of tints. The characters in this story are at least three dimensional. Beautifully told story of the inner world of people we know. Loved it, and then the ending, which for Steinbeck is always an exclamation point!

Historia
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

I enjoyed the character development.
Revisado: 04-02-19
The problem, and it is a small one, is that when you have so many interesting characters, it is difficult to wrap them all up in a neat package at the end. Scott Brick is my absolute performer.

Balson's Narrative Always Excellent
Revisado: 10-21-17
I love to listen to Balson tales. They are moving, both in reality and emotion. The only small problem with this tale is that I kind of figured out the ending a bit too early. The characters, especially Liam are full and honest. I highly recommend, and anticipate Balsom's next Taggert story.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you are, like me, obsessed with what happened in the middle of the twentieth century, you will follow me into this world with fascination and horror. Clearly a time that I just can't understand, no matter how many of these books I read.
