Very poor representation of bdsm. Lacking consent and full of abuse. Did not enjoy and was not pleasantly disturbed like I like to be by a story line and writing.

Im embarrassed to admit I’ve listened to this more than a few times. Loved this kinky sapphic romance. Nice build and really creative sex scenes. The performances by the narrators really sold the story, especially Malone.

“Wicked Ties” was the first book I read by Shayla Black and I thought is was so steamy, had really interesting and complex characters, and was just overall a great story. I’ve since read more of her stories and each one gets worse and worse. I think I’m officially done with this author.
Firstly Layla’s character has no substance save her abuse that is brought up a thousand times throughout the novel. Her being raped and beat is the main focus of her storyline and it’s uncomfortable to continually hear how horrible she was treated. At certain points her rape is brought up for no real reason at all. Layla’s character is very one dimensional; she’s untrusting, has been abused, and refuses to wear clothes. Her refusal to wear clothes make no sense at all.
Unlike Black’s previous books, she doesn’t give a voice to the female protagonist and the personality she does give is contradictory. She’s only 22 and has been held captive for many years, but somehow has an extensive vocabulary and a sharp strategic mind. However when talking to Trees she seems to have no knowledge of very simple concepts. She goes between been quick witted to dim witted throughout the whole story.
Black’s other female protagonists from other books are written as sweet yet strong, brave, and described in great detail both physically and mentally. However Layla is not given the same care and development for her character.
Her trying to give trees a blowjob so he’ll sleep deeply while she escapes? Very unsettling and doesn’t make sense for a woman who has been so horribly abused.
The fact that the entire story is narrated in a man’s voice, again neglects Layla’s perspective and takes away her humanity.
I think it’s very irresponsible to write ethnic characters when you clearly have no interest or respect for the people. Too many negative stereotypes: drug cartel, thugs, rapists and Layla being under 5 feet tall. As a Mexican woman this was almost unbearable to read and I only finished the book so I could leave an honest review. Shayla, please stick to the characters you’re comfortable writing. It was very clear you didn’t see the beauty or have respect for this abused Mexican woman you created. I’ve read/listened to so many of your books and Layla was the least thought out and probably the least likable of all your characters.
And to top it all off, the sex scenes were trash. What a waste of a credit.

I couldn’t make it past chapter 11. Not only does the storyline seem forced and often doesn’t make logical sense, but the mental & physical abuse and manipulation overshadows any hot moments. The female lead is supposed to be capable, smart and strong, but she never displays these qualities. Instead she allows the Blake, Saint and Kayan (sp) to degrade and belittle her every chance they get. I kept waiting for Tatum to stand up for herself and show herself their equal, but she never does. Instead she’s consumed with being accepted into the new school (eye roll) via the “keepers”.
The story is so problematic from non indigenous students taking on a Native American tradition, to the constant bullying and degradation. I could not connect to the men in this story for any of the sex scenes to actually bring any heat. Really disappointed.

I really enjoyed the first story and the characters dynamic. I wasn’t impressed by the second story. Like someone else had mentioned, Ryder is just a bully the entire story.

As someone into BDSM, I was pleasantly surprised. Dark, taboo and full of heat. I’ve read it twice already.
