Historia
Edith and Ashley have been best friends for over forty-two years. They’ve shared the mundane and the momentous together: trick or treating and binge drinking; Gilligan’s Island reruns and REM concerts; hickeys and heartbreak; surprise Scottish wakes; marriages, infertility, and children. As Ash says, “Edi’s memory is like the back-up hard drive for mine.”

Self important and beyond boring
Revisado: 03-19-23
Self important and beyond boring. No character development. Barely a plot. Not well written. Humorless.

Boring Boring Boring
Revisado: 09-15-21
Unlikeable, sullen, self-absorbed characters, all of whom are boring beyond belief. Could not get past the first few chapters.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Do not torture yourself with this book

Any additional comments?
This book is little more than one big pity party: a prurient descent into madness, self- loathing and self-multination. The characters are either docile door mats or predators, all of whom could benefit from an extended stay at a psychiatric hospital. If I hear the phrase, "I'm sorry," one more time, I might scream. As if those three words are sufficient excuse for horrific actions. The book spans college through adulthood but none of the characters changes or grows with the passage of time. Andy, the doctor who treats Jude, the central character, has clearly forgotten the Hippocratic oath and should have his license removed by the AMA. As for the so-called friends: they are little more than enablers. Fairness of full disclosure, I took pity on myself two thirds of the way through and put the book down. Take it up at your own peril.
