Historia
99% Invisible is a big-ideas podcast about small-seeming things, revealing stories baked into the buildings we inhabit, the streets we drive, and the sidewalks we traverse. The show celebrates design and architecture in all of its functional glory and accidental absurdity, with intriguing tales of both designers and the people impacted by their designs.

The audio balancing just doesn't work for cars
Revisado: 05-08-23
Trying to listen to this in my car - normally no problem. The audio though was so suppressed or something that I had to turn up the volume on my radio so high that when my turn by turn directions came across, it was blasting me. (Note - the same volume control on my phone handles maps and media.) I returned it, unfortunately.
That said, I will buy it in Kindle or something so I can still read it because the writing and subject matter is fascinating.

Historia
Why are cellphone plans so much more expensive in the United States than in Europe? It seems a simple question. But the search for an answer took Thomas Philippon on an unexpected journey through some of the most complex and hotly debated issues in modern economics. Ultimately, he reached a surprising conclusion: American markets, once a model for the world, are giving up on healthy competition.

superb analysis of the US move toward monopolies
Revisado: 01-15-20
very convincing, well presented economic analysis of how and why the US slid to excessive concentration of economic activity during the last 20 years and must return to healthy competition and free entry.

Revisado: 12-28-19
I'd never thought of my life and environment in the perspective offered by this book and all the scientific studies underpinning it, but I will never again forget about the importance of biodiversity to our lives. a must- read if there ever was one!

Historia
The Fed today is not our friend. Its "low rates forever" policy means we must look elsewhere for yield. Dividend-paying stocks don't help. Blue chips don't pay more than 2% or 3%. On a $1 million portfolio, that's less than $30,000 in annual income. Not enough. There's a better way. Income investing experts Brett Owens and Tom Jacobs show you how to safely double, triple and even quadruple these yields. Turn that 2% that stocks pay into 6%, 7% and even 8% (for $80,000 on that million bucks) without doing anything risky.

solid retirement investment strategy
Revisado: 12-05-19
Brett and Tom do a great job at explaining the bases and motivation of their "8% no-withdrawal portfolio" (and Tom is an excellent reader, very pleasant and clear). however, to actually execute on this strategy I think you'll want to purchase Brett's newsletters (starting at $99/year but you might get a special-offer discount), or have Tom manage your portfolio (if it's at least$100,000). as for me, since I love self-managing my money based on sound advice, I've signed up for the newsletters and plan to try them out for at least a year or two!

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Historia
All life as we know it is carbon-based and reliant on sources of liquid water and energy for its survival; it is also, of course, known from just one planet: the Earth, a world perfectly suited to host life. But across a universe of at least 100 billion habitable, earthlike worlds, life cannot be restricted to just this one place. Or can it?

Historia
Epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Tom Patterson, were vacationing in Egypt when Tom came down with a stomach bug. What at first seemed like a case of food poisoning quickly turned critical, and by the time Tom had been transferred via emergency medevac to the world-class medical center at UC San Diego, where both he and Steffanie worked, blood work revealed why modern medicine was failing: Tom was fighting one of the most dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the world.

Fascinating
Revisado: 09-11-19
As someone interested in medical thrillers, epidemiology, and the like, this book really hooked me. I do think she dragged out the "suspense" before they finally gave him the phage therapy a bit long. Aside from that, it was really fascinating. My husband was in ICU for 10 days a few years ago and I totally sympathised with the protagonist, but it was great to see her find ways to overcome that helpless feeling you get watching a loved one in a situation like that.

Historia
Galahad Threepwood is causing scandal again...this time by deciding to NOT publish his potentially humiliating high-society memoirs. His decision causes rifts in the ranks at castle Blandings and all involved split into three camps: those who want the book suppressed, those who want it published, and those, who for some reason or another, that have been sent to steal it.

Historia
While Blandings Castle sleeps in the summer sun, the Hon. Galahad Threepwood, brother of the Earl of Emsworth, is busily engaged in writing his Reminiscences, and they look set to be as warm as the weather, if not warmer. For Galahad has led a thoroughly misspent life, and his acquaintances can all too easily recall their past follies in his company. Reputations are at stake and even the nobility and gentry are beginning to panic.
