Historia
Long known for his range and supple prose (he is the only writer elected to membership in both the Baseball Hall of Fame and the American Academy of Arts and Letters), Angell won the 2015 American Society of Magazine Editors’ Best Essay award for “This Old Man,” which forms a centerpiece for this book. This deeply personal account is a survey of the limitations and discoveries of great age, with abundant life, poignant loss, jokes, retrieved moments, and fresh love, set down in an informal and moving fashion.

Many illusions shattered...................
Revisado: 07-04-17
It was something of an effort to finish but shattering facts kept emerging. This story makes most other examples of racism pale in comparison. Really a blood fueled lust for money that defies comparison. I kept thinking the brutal killings would stop but they went right on. A government sanctioned way of life. In a way this story never ended.

Historia
This first novel in The Deptford Trilogy introduces Ramsay, a man who returns from World War I decorated with the Victoria Cross but who is destined to be caught in a no man's land where memory, history, and myth collide. As we hear Ramsey tell his story, we begin to realize that, from childhood, he has influenced those around him in a perhaps mystical, perhaps pernicious way.

Historia
At first light on Tuesday, May 28th, 1918, waves of American riflemen from the US Army's First Division climbed from their trenches, charged across the shell-scarred French dirt of no-man's-land, and captured the hilltop village of Cantigny from the grip of the German Army. Those who survived the enemy machine-gun fire and hand-to-hand fighting held on for the next two days and nights in shallow foxholes under the sting of mustard gas and crushing steel of artillery fire.

Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. Had no idea what I'd ordered.......
Revisado: 01-12-17
What did you love best about All the Ugly and Wonderful Things?
It was almost exclusively about society's underbelly. Huge crack operation treated as normal day to day life in this book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Wavy's college room mate. Not intimidated by the odd dynamo in her room she added a different angle on Wavy than rest of book.
What does Jorjeana Marie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Remarkable range of characters she creates with her voice. Not an easy thing as you learn from listening to various narrators with sometimes painful efforts to do the same.
If you could rename All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, what would you call it?
That title in no way describes this book.So about anything else would work as well or better.
Any additional comments?
Had I understood content better before ordering I probably would have passed but glad I listened.

Revisado: 12-21-16
If you could sum up No Man's Land in three words, what would they be?
weak female performer
Who was your favorite character and why?
Rodgers. Most complete character in book easily.Best horse in a weak field. All the stars are his.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Kyf Brewer?
No time soon....
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The man who could not be blamed.
I think Baldacci's long successful history helped this one get published.

Historia
Few events have captivated students of American history like the Civil War. Its most striking personalities seem somehow outsized, magnified beyond the ability of books or even legend to contain them. And few among those personalities have ever held our attention like General Robert Edward Lee.With his Army of Northern Virginia, Lee came to embody the cause of the Confederacy itself

I thought I knew this story........
Revisado: 10-08-16
If you could sum up Robert E. Lee and His High Command in three words, what would they be?
Needed cannon factory.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Hearing a retelling of the incredible carnage of young men dead in their prime about made me cry.The north started out with much larger population and the South was set back at least a hundred years of regional progress as a result.
Any additional comments?
Dr Gallagher disabused me of some very long held opinions about the CSA.Plus - in enough detail that I was thoroughly convinced of my misunderstandings. It took me a while to adjust to Dr Gallagher's often breathless delivery and I realized the man was/is excited about the story he's telling.

No one captures the complexities of Appalachia - a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty - as evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature.

Historia
Luisa "Lu" Brant is the newly elected - and first female - state's attorney of Howard County, Maryland, a job in which her widower father famously served. Fiercely intelligent and ambitious, she sees an opportunity to make her name by trying a mentally disturbed drifter accused of beating a woman to death in her home. It's not the kind of case that makes headlines, but peaceful Howard County doesn't see many homicides.

Is this Harper Lee's second book ?
Revisado: 08-07-16
If you could sum up Wilde Lake in three words, what would they be?
Formulaic. Long.OK.
What other book might you compare Wilde Lake to and why?
To Kill a Mockingbird. Well there was big brother, precocious little sister, and the neighbor kid in the bushes. And of course they had a widowed lawyer father that knew everything, for a while..( Several more similarities.) And they went forward living.
Scout had way more early grit than Little Lu but I suspect their lives were not all that different over time.
What does Kathleen McInerney and Nicole Poole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I don't know.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.
