Historia
Rocking on front porches, drinking sweet iced tea out of heirloom glasses while indulging in a little innocent gossip is a way of life in the small southern town of Park Place, South Carolina. Reverend Rock Clark is the middle-aged preacher of the Presbyterian Church in town and has made peace with the fact that he is "unlucky in love" and will always be a bachelor. He's become quite comfortably settled in his life, but suddenly a serious car accident involving a mysterious young woman and her daughter throws him into the role of detective.

God never approved blatant sexism like this! This is the worst of Christianity! Men are not supposed to be dominating.

Historia
As a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder on an island in Puget Sound, snow blankets the countryside. The whiteness covers the courthouse, but it cannot conceal the memories at work inside: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unrequited love, and the ghosts of racism that still haunt the islanders. First novels rarely attract as much attention as Snow Falling on Cedars. Remaining on best seller lists for months, it has cast a spell on listeners across the country.

Great premise but painstakingly told
Revisado: 02-27-25
This is one of those books that give way too much irrelevant data without ever telling any of it together. And even minor characters body parts and sexuality are brought into it in a totally irrelevant way. But there are also details like a distant relative committed Seppuku that could’ve been brought in in a meaningful way and just are abandoned needlessly. Either cut out all the irrelevance or make it relevant.

Historia
Sandra Dallas, best-selling author of The Persian Pickle Club, weaves an intricate and sophisticated tale in New Mercies. Nora Bondurant is divorced— unfathomable for a woman in 1933—and has inherited a house from a dead aunt she never even knew existed. But when she travels to Mississippi to claim her inheritance, she finds her eccentric neighbors would rather help her acquire a new husband than reveal the secrets surrounding her aunt’s death.

Wonderful lack of cheesy romance
Revisado: 01-21-25
This is a unique story line that addresses issues of the day without being heavy or devolving to cliched romanticism.

Historia
Early in the Great War, men left Britain’s factories in droves to enlist. Struggling to keep up production, arsenals hired women to build the weapons the military urgently needed. “Be the Girl Behind the Man Behind the Gun,” the recruitment posters beckoned. Thousands of women—cooks, maids, shopgirls, and housewives—answered their nation’s call. These “munitionettes” worked grueling shifts often seven days a week, handling TNT and other explosives with little protective gear.

Where was the plot?
Revisado: 07-18-24
This is full of historical detail that could have made this a great work but it is essentially just a book of details with very little plot. Would love to see a better author make this topic into a more interesting work of historical fiction.

Historia
Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world. Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's twentieth century. Breathtaking in its scope, unforgettable in its descriptions, this is a masterpiece that is extraordinary in every way.

Needs. Good editor
Revisado: 05-20-24
This is a fabulous story of China’s Maoist history but desperately needs a good editor to cut out so many of the needless details that make the story drag.

Could have been good
Revisado: 04-04-24
I have lived other books by the Thoenes but this one was so full of exaggerations and extremism that it just makes Christians look crazy. So disappointing because this really could have been good if they’d kept it more realistic.

Starts in the middle of the story
Revisado: 06-10-23
This is not a stand alone sequel, it is part two of a series broken into two parts but neither is a stand alone book. I think it would have been more successful as a single book with a better focus on inspiring story and writing.
The writing is adequate but I can't tell for sure if the writer or the story itself is lacking. Paul Cardall's music is so gorgeous that I was really hoping for more, here. He seems like an amazing person so I was eager to read more about his life. This just seems to fall really short of expectations.

Great premise with shallow writing
Revisado: 03-02-23
This is definitely a fun idea for a story, but what a let down. Very little character development and so many missed opportunities to get to know these ladies better. This could have been a really good book but it was only survivable by the great performance of the narrator injecting some life into the story.

Better than average historical romance
Revisado: 04-01-21
This was still a predictable romance without a lot of plot or character development but for a light historical romance it was better done than many and less formulaic which was a nice change.
