Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

With the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Looming Tower, Lawrence Wright became generally acknowledged as one of our major journalists writing on terrorism in the Middle East. This collection draws on several articles he wrote while researching that book as well as many that he's written since, following where and how al-Qaeda and its core cultlike beliefs have morphed and spread.

Reporters experiences
Revisado: 05-03-17
There's were parts of this book I enjoyed more than others. I thought it would be more historical, which it is, but it's more stretches of the authors personal experience mixed in with stretches of pure nonfiction, historical record. Some useful information to take away and learn about the region, but it bounced around a bit as a result.

Historia
Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week's meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts' predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight.

Worthwhile and valuable
Revisado: 03-13-17
Parts were more relevant or interesting than others, but I enjoyed this read and think many people could benefit form from it. Tetlock references kahneman's work a lot though, so I recommend thinking fast and slow as a companion book.

Started strong but faded out
Revisado: 02-13-17
The first half of this book was incredible with the description of the training. This was the books strength, as the author really captured the transformation needed for this work and the psychological toll. Probably by design because of the secrecy of the missions, the book fizzles out after the author gets through selection and begins participating in operations. Unfortunately it made the book feel somewhat abrupt as it ended, but still worth a listen.

More than 44 percent of Americans admit to losing sleep over stress. In The Upside of Stress, McGonigal highlights new research indicating that stress can, in fact, make us stronger, smarter, and happier - if we learn how to embrace it.

Good perspective
Revisado: 09-16-16
I've heard most of these events from other stories, but it's good to hear them from Pete's perspective since he was there. It felt somewhat awkward at first with the life lessons being spelled out, but they do come together well as the book progresses. A good listen that I'll probably buy in book form for referencing.

Relentless Strike tells the inside story of Joint Special Operations Command, the secret military organization that, during the past decade, has revolutionized counterterrorism, seamlessly fusing intelligence and operational skills to conduct missions that hit the headlines and those that have remained in the shadows - until now. Because JSOC includes the military's most storied special operations units - Delta Force, SEAL Team Six, the 75th Ranger Regiment - as well as America's most secret aviation and intelligence units, this is their story, too.

Learned more details than ever
Revisado: 08-26-16
As an avid military history/modern history buff, I thought I knew a lot for these events well. Perhaps I did compared to the average Joe, but some of the details and personal stories in this book were incredible and really provided quite a value to my understanding of this time period in our military history. Highly recommended.

It begins with an ambushed commando raid that leaves all but one of the expatriate resistance fighters dead or captured. Though wounded, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, takes off on a courageous, incredible trek into the wilds of the Lyngen Alps, while the Nazis pursue him relentlessly. He suffers frostbite, snowblindness, and a terrible fall in an avalanche. At last, delirious and near death, he chances on to a cabin, where the first in a series of remarkably brave and clever men and women come to his aid.

Incredible story, okay retelling
Revisado: 06-28-16
I enjoyed the story mostly because there were moments when I would scoff out loud in amazement that someone could survive some of the things Jan did. The retelling was just okay though. I didn't like the narrators voice, but it didn't bug me as much as other people. The writing style is helpful at times, but also makes it easy to zone out at others. Sometimes action could happen quickly after being built up with a lot of backstory, so I sometimes found myself lost. I don't regret listening to it as it was fascinating, but I wouldn't listen again I think.

Historia
Morten Storm was an unlikely Jihadi. A six-foot-one red-haired Dane, Storm spent his teens in and out of trouble. A book about the Prophet Mohammed prompted his conversion to Islam, and Storm sought purpose in a community of believers. He attended a militant madrasah in Yemen, named his son Osama, and became close friends with Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born terrorist cleric. But after a decade of Jihadi life, he not only repudiated extremism but, in a quest for atonement, became a double agent for the CIA and British and Danish intelligence.
