Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Worst book I’ve ever read/listened to
Revisado: 04-18-25
A plot full of holes, bad writing, deus ex machina endings. If I didn’t need to finish it for a book group, I would have asked for my money back. Time wasted.

I’m glad I stuck with it, though I almost gave up
Revisado: 08-30-23
Tom Lake is not one of Ann Patchett’s best books. Though the opening is engaging, there is a period of time about an hour in when the plot is unapparent, the reader (love you Meryl Streep, but this also is not your best work) was treacly, and the characters 2-D (especially the Daughter’s who all seemed far far younger than their stated biological ages). I was, frankly, bored. I stayed with the book because reviewers seemed polarized: people loved it or hated it, and I simply couldn’t see what there was to love. I also had no other book on deck, so I found myself going back to it. Once the story moved fully to Tom Lake, the plot picked up, the characters became more interesting, and Streep hit her stride. Streep struggled most when reading the role of the current-day narrator when speaking with or referring to her girls (who seemed about ten years old). Streep’s narrator was almost a caricature of a simple, uninteresting, folksy, tsk-tsking farm mother and I’m not sure whether that was how Patchett wrote the character or how Streep read it or a combination of both. Regardless I finished and, towards the end, found myself wishing the book were longer. In sum, the book and performance were uneven but worth the read at the end of the day.

Tedious writing
Revisado: 02-11-23
Decent performances by the readers and an interesting plot cannot overcome author’s repetitious, tedious writing.
