Historia
AD, 98. The bustling army base at Vindolanda lies on the northern frontier of Britannia and the entire Roman world. In just over 20 years' time, the Emperor Hadrian will build his famous wall. But for now, defences are weak as tribes rebel against Rome. It falls to Flavius Ferox, Briton and Roman centurion, to keep the peace. But it will take more than just a soldier's courage to survive life in Roman Britain.

Engaging historical fiction brilliantly narrated
Revisado: 01-18-25
This book is worth the listen just to enjoy the narration of Peter Noble. Both author and narrator were new to me but I’m hooked. Compelling characters, well paced story, great history lesson. I do wonder how anyone survived past 25 in the first century. Loved learning about the tribes of Britain when Rome ruled the world.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-05-25
Unlikable hero, obvious villains, predicable ending, labored dialogue, and eye-rolling sexual references that felt incredibly out of place. Well narrated considering the material. Gained a few historical insights into the Regency era and locality that were not worth the pain of a truly mediocre read.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

Love Mackenzie as a narrator although he struggles with women’s voices. This does not diminish the experience. Why haven’t I heard of these before? Can’t wait for the next.

Historia
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man - Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

I so wanted to love this but….
Revisado: 06-22-24
I appreciated learning more about Regency style and politics and acquiring new vocabulary words for fashion, transportation, and prostitution. The narrator is superb. I am annoyed by mysteries that pull the villain out of a hat without giving you a chance to work it out. The fun is when you can say, “Wow, I didn’t see that plot twist coming,” not “wait- who is HE?” I’m also unconvinced that our loyal British nobleman is hopelessly devoted to a courtesan who betrayed England to France. And I’ve never seen so many loose threads. I think Anne Perry has given us enough tired retellings of wicked aristocrats, and as for the virtuous mobs- I don’t think we should pretend that the French Revolution was a major victory for truth and justice. I’ll keep looking for a series that can hold a candle to Laurie King’s Mary Russell.

Mildly interesting stories

The narrator uses a sing song voice that is incredibly annoying, as is the British dialect used for Mrs Hudson. I gave up before I finished the book.

Ok I admit it - I grieved when the narrator was not Jenny Sterlin. She is an impossible act to follow although the narrator did a good job. The story is wonderful and the ending joyous. Another triumph! Worth waiting for!

Rarely does a book get worse as you get into it but this one went downhill. Story dragged to the point I didn’t care what happened at the end. Is the rest of the series this bad?

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Disappointing but harmless
Revisado: 10-19-22
I should not have read this after The Thursday Murder Club series. The Marlow Murder Club has a forced story line with dialogue more suited to a screenplay. The climax ending is highly contrived. All female characters are motivated by their history of male oppression. I wonder what the author could accomplish if he was free from political apologetics.
